Just for the record, is the rcd a 30mA type, not a 10mA?

    Explain the Neutral???

Bathjobby has a point in his reply to your quote. It's all about attitude. Would this be your reply in a pub, face to face. Hmmm...possibly not. Does us all a favour, be polite and positive in your interesting and helpful replies. You are obviously a knowledgable guy with lots to tell, stay on...

    1.5sq.mm spur from ringmain

May I ask why the posts were "unfair" to others?

    Part P? Question.

I thought forums were to offer guidance or answers to questions. My background is industrial automation and factory services. I have very little to do with domestic stuff other than minor work for friends and family. I don't read up as much as I should on house-bashing. Part P is somewhat...

    Faulty MCBs??

Paddy and Murphy have always been different. :) What's there ringmain setup? I'm sure a 2.5sq.mm ringmain in Eire is not a completely different science, is it? :? Please enlighten me.

    1.5sq.mm spur from ringmain

It is permitted that 1.5sq.mm cable can be used to spur off a ringmain. You cannot spur off a spur unless the original spur is from the load side of a 13a FCU. This 1.5sq.mm is protected by the ringmain fuse of 32amps yet the ccc of the cable is approx. 17-20amps. This spur feeds a twin...

    Bulbs popping

If the lamp goes again in the same fitting, you have been given a clue of where to start checking. Is it a Bayonet lamp fitting? One of the pins may be worn. Are they sprung? Is it an Edison Screw fitting? Check the center connector is in tact.

    Part P? Question.

damocles; what exactly is the purpose of Part P then? How does it stop "Cowboys"? Why can't a qualified spark pass his own work now? (Unless Gov'm't approved)

    Fluoresecent tubes only work intermittantly

Is Live to L and Neutral to N? This Q not meant to be offensive. Possibly defective capacitor. I would discourage the use of tester screwdrivers as opposed to a DMM. These testers work from 70volts up therefore if you have a voltage drop in the line to the luminaire you can't really tell. As...

    Faulty MCBs??

The mcb ratings are lower than the typical 30/32amp per ringmain. Check the current loading of the ringmains under normal load. It may be that the ringmains are pulling in excess of 20amps, the mcb doesn't neccessarily trip in a partial overload condition but the heat generation likely...

    Part P? Question.

If it has now become illegal to do DIY electrical work in residential dwellings, so why are B&Q, Homebase, etc... still selling electrical components? Why doesn't the Government make BS7671 law? I am a qualified Maintenance electrician and carry out "foreigners" quite regularly. I am...

    Air pipe under doorway?

Last year I tiled our newly fitted kitchen, floor and wall, diy style and a good job it was. The kitchen floor leads to the living room's wooden floor which was fitted by a pro. I decided to fit a door tread to tidy the join in the doorway, a post-tiling-thought. I decided to screw the tread...

My bird aint no bright spark

We split our main bedroom into two for our boy and girl to have their own rooms. I installed new sockets into the dividing wall. I took the opportunity to renew the ones in our new room. My missus with her keen eye was adamant our two sockets were different with a matching socket in the dividing...
