    dried Hardwall, PVA or wet?

I've put Hardwall on a wall but had to let it dry out. It's well scored though, so there's a good key. So now it's skimming, but should the Hardwall be PVA'd, or will wetting it be enough to secure a skim coat? I'll use Multifinish for the skim.

    Bonding or Hardwall?

It's a long time since I did any plastering, so I'm well out of date regarding the materials available. I've just base plastered a wall with Browning (this was recommended to me as suitable), and was appalled. I can only describe it as solidified shaving foam. It has no strength at all. So...

    Which way to play it?

OK. Here's the background. 'Solid' 9in brickwork. Courses of bricks longways and crossways (these last through the whole thickness of the wall. Don;t know what to call them!). House built on a slope. This is the front face. The original DPV is thick tar sheet. Still in place, Seems okay...

    Nail in wall rusting through

I've just stripped a wall back to basics and painted it. Very nice it is too. Unfortunately it now appears that there are a couple of nails lurking just under the surface of the plaster. Propmpted by the water content of the emulsion, these have mushroomed rust spots on the surface of the new...

    Terrifying DIY

After my experiences and reading those of other posters, I've come to the conclusion that some people (is there a type?), simply shouldn't be allowed to own property. Or maybe even to live in houses at all. Even tents might be too good for them

    Skirting problem

It was you who built the house! I knew I'd catch up with you sooner or later. Seriously though. Scribing is not an option either as the pieces have to be offered up true for it to work. The walls are so out that it's a nightmare. I've also found that the floors slope a lot too...

    Skirting problem

I've removed the old skirtings and am now faced with fitting new. I find however that the walls are really out of true. They aren't straight up and down, nor are they straight across. I use a level to get a true horizontal, but because the walls are out, I have to use a level to get the...

    Thermostatic valves

Th system does work, although the rads are surprisingly noisy, making a lot of tinkling noise. One in particular is very prone to a lot of air, although it's not the highest in the system. I notice since installation that the bathroom sink taps and toilet cistern now sing sometimes...

Chimney dropped 2 feet into loft space

I went to view a property last year where someone had done this very thing. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. It was a big chimney and a very big overhang ...

Not a disaster as such, but could have been nasty!

You bought the house from the previous owners widow?

    Thermostatic valves

Okay, probably a dumb question, but ... I've just had new CH installed. I notice that the thermostatic valves are not installed the same way round on every radiator. On some, the valve is where the hot comes in, on others, where it goes out. Is this acceptable? Does it make any difference?

Neighbour dispute so he's turned off my water supply! Help!

Fraud. Nice one. Should have no problem issuing the sort of threats that will get the water turned back on.

    Centre/Wolsley thermostat problem

The boiler has a mechanical timer fitted. It's switched off though. Heating is simply controlled by a simple room stat.

    That Brown stuff ...

Thanks. It really is disgusting stuff. I'm finding that now it's exposed to the air, it's drying a bit, although it's still a bit gloopy.

    Centre/Wolsley thermostat problem

I've just had an EHE0200155 room thermostat fitted as part of a new CH installation. It's hard wired to a Baxi Duo-tec combi boiler. The stat seemed to work all right for a week or so but now seems to have become very inaccurate - a full 5 degrees out in fact (checked using a thermometer)...

How to make good door frame?

I've cleaned off some door frames. The doors used to swing the other way, so there are large slots cut out where the hinges used to be. I'm going to paint the frames, but how to make good these big slots? The previous owner used polyfiller by the pound, but it's harder than the wood and is...

    That Brown stuff ...

Paint actually. I've stripped back paintwork to find that the initial layer is a thick sort of dark brown goo. It's obviously paint of some sort, but it's still sort of tacky. I know that it's at least 50 years old, possibly more (this house may be 1930's. but I'm not sure). I came...
