Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

Yes, that’s what I indicated to, maybe using mortar, bricks etc to wedge the wall in as tight as possible, if only temporary. Either way, I should be able to challenge the builders before they come on site as to what they would target, and hopefully fallback to a OSB + plastic if they don’t find...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

It’s a solid wall, 2 bricks thick’s. Most probably around 5.5m long (once columns are in and some bricks taken out for manuvering. It would effectively be a free standing wall (no returns) with a wall in the middle coming off that wall like a T shape. I’ll make sure I check with the builder...

    Steel beam ties to masonry

Maybe, but still need some way of fastening to the steel beams. If we drill into the steel beams, my worry is it will reduce the capable load, hence why I think the SE should have calculated the beams with fasteners in mind.

    Steel beam ties to masonry

Hah, exactly my thoughts Tony, I like the idea of the product, but unable to find a supply. Considering the cost of doing what woody suggested, (assuming it’s the traditional approach most builders take), I don’t think it’s necessarily worth the effort to source those ancon hammer on ties...

    Steel beam ties to masonry

Seems simple enough, I guess costing wise, will just need one of these for the day (if builder doesn’t have one) https://www.hss.com/hire/p/rapid-cartridge-hammer, Nails and ties. Maybe it is simple enough of a process to omit and I’m just over thinking it. I will need to check with the SE...

Digging and pouring padstone and foundations

Hi I’ve attached the site drawings of an extension i am planning to get built. The red lines are the anticipated beams. C1 and F1 are the columns and padstones. Padstone size is 1200x950x500). Purple dotted line (F2) is the new standard depth foundations (60cm wide and 100cm deep). These are...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

That’s what I though, although worst case scenario, I guess we could board up the opening with OSB and waterproof if we believe safety is a concerns. I agree, I think I’ll be going with the builders who will aim to put the posts in first and then the beam and if necessary then take down the...

    Steel beam ties to masonry

Hi guys I’ll be getting 2 steel columns installed for a 6m beam. One will have a pier of masonry on the corner of the existing building. The other will be right in the corner, SE specced it to be 1 leaf of brick + 203 steel. This is aimed to make is as flush to the new extension wall as...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

Hi All As part of my extension project with existing ground floor being open-planned, the design is to build a Goal Post structure, 2 Padstones, 2 Columns, Beam on 2 columns etc to open up a 6 meter wall. Due to budget constraints and the fact we need to live in the house, we wanted to keep...

    Extension wall with partial earth

I’ll check with BCO about full fill insulation. Products like the xtratherm full fill offers a layer of moisture protection. Do you see any issues with this setup for the retaining wall: 300mm aerated foundation Block - 100mm cavity - 100mm aerated block. The rest of the walls that are not...

    Extension wall with partial earth

The cavity wall that’s spec’ed is a 100mm Block 100mm cavity 100mm Block. We were planning to put 100mm PIR insulation in the cavity. Based on what you mention about the vent going up the cavity, the general size of the vent is 50mm thick. Do you mean either use 50mm PIR or make the cavity...

    Extension wall with partial earth

Great, thanks. Yes, Building control have also stated using telescopic air vents that go under a concrete floor to vent air into the existing void. Assuming we are putting a vent in the cavity, we won’t be able to insulate the area. Is this loss of insulation suitable? I suppose when it gets...

    Extension wall with partial earth

Thanks the designs don’t allow keeping the existing wall and leaving a gap. The extension is just about 3m up to the wall. For #2 creating another retaining wall will result in wasting space between the house and the new retaining wall. I believe #3 is what I am looking for. From the looks of...

    Extension wall with partial earth

hi I’m looking for advice on getting an extension wall built that will be partially under ground. The current wall is a retaining wall as attached, which is about 800mm off ground level. The extension wall will be up to this height with windows sitting on top. I have had a couple of builder...
