    Illegal installation

This is what I don't get, if the inspection says it is all compliment and is all safe then what is the problem? Does the OP want to grass this person up otr something?

    Illegal installation

Yep and getting the electrics checked will put his piece of mind at rest. Apart from obvious dangers from dangerous wiring there are far more important things to worry about when buying a house, such as how good the structure is.

    Illegal installation

Just ask for a reduction in price, even if the entire place needs rewiring it might not cost that much depending on big the place is. There are probably 100,000s of houses with 'ilegal' electric in them!.

How long left to rewire house

I want a job in Jersey too, sick of the bloody rain here. I ma not qualified to do anything mind, but you can pay me to watch :D. Amazingly it took 1 person a full weekend to rewire house back in 1980! Shows how much the regulations have changed. Mind you all he did was replace sockets in...

Expected life of modern Control Panels/Ext Bell Boxes

My last Texecomm Varitas unit lasted about ten years but it was a replacement from an old Optima unit which keyboard had failed. I ripped out the entire alarm system last year as we kept getting false alarms. The entire system had been expanded by me over the years and the wiring was frankly...

    Electrics left ok by workman?

What idiot builder doesn't check for cables for doing this sort of work? I always check for electric cables, water pipes etc before doing any work. Has saved me on a couple of occasions. One thing I have learnt about old houses is never assume anything where cables or water/gas pipes are...

    Cable size for pendant light

The cable itself is fine assuming it is just a lamp holder that is required and thus not earthed. I would check with a spark that is doesn't need to be heat resistant cable though (on here). I have only ever wired up complete pendent packages so never had to make my own cable for one.

How to remove old BT box

Just what I was once told, but thinking about it is far too low current to warrant the need for a fuse anyway.

How to remove old BT box

Even if you don't pay for a copper landline service the cables will still be live, and if you short them you could blow a fuse at the exchange and you could be charged for that. Best to ring BT and get them to completely disconnect it at at the cabinet on your road so then you can do what...

    Does this cable need replacing?

Thanks I think I might just leave it, I have just had a good feel of the cable and it is all smooth, will need to secure the cable to the joists though and cut out a notch in the floorboard so no further rubbing can happen.

    Does this cable need replacing?

Need to ask about how best to bond the joists but that is for the building section. The joists are resting on brick but there is no cement holding it in, so when you walk across it the joists move a good inch or so.It looks like it just needs jacking up and repointing. I can't quite see...

    Does this cable need replacing?

One of the floors on the downstairs of the house has been sinking and today I decided to investigate. The problem is due to the mortar which secures the joists into the bricks failing which has caused it to sink, it just needs jacking up and re bonding so not a major issue. However I am not...

    What is a competent person?

So really the answer is as this has never been tried in a court of law nobody has a bloody clue what the actual law is in regard to DIY work unless the work is clearly notifiable e.g a new ring main from the CU or adding new lights in a bathroom etc.

    What is a competent person?

I have seen things that state works must be completed by a competent person. Even to change a light switch it would state that, but clearly it is not illegal for job bloggs to change his light switch as longs as it is done safely. So it cannot mean that you have to be a member of a scheme...

    What is a competent person?

As Part P of the building regulations say all electrical work must be completed by a competent person what is actually meant by that? I consider myself competent at the work I do because I only do basic electrical work such as swapping switches, sockets and light fittings. The most advance...

I Can't Believe It's Not Picture Of The Week

It is just an extension lead in effect, but probably safer as it is clipped to the wall etc. The danger of course with doing it that way is people might not realise, and plug in a tumble dryer into the extension and a washing machine into the other, overloading the socket.

I Can't Believe It's Not Picture Of The Week

It is tacky but as longs as the correct cable is used (1.5mm) then I electrically I don't see too much problem in putting in an extra socket on a plug. I have seen this quite a few times. The danger is of course overloading the existing socket that supplies it. The wiring to that socket...

Wiring in a sounder for Texacom Veritas alarm

I wired in a new alarm about 16 months ago which works perfectly, however I put the control panel in a cupboard under the stairs powered by an FCU and the problem is if the alarm goes off it is very quiet. You can hear it outside but inside the house so I want to put a new sounder so that when...

Loft lighting and socket circuits, on plugs. Allowed?

One of my friends did something similar. His upstairs lights were wired in lead sheath so he rewired it in PVC. However he didn't want to touch the CU (I dread to think how old it is) so he wired the entire upstairs lights using a FCU connected to a socket. Really not ideal but I can't see it...

Adding a new socket in the kitchen getting round lack of RCD

Now one of the bedrooms is finished, the next job is looking to be to refit the kitchen. Currently we having to use a extension lead with 1.5mm flex to power the washing machine from a different circuit. This is how it is wired at the moment:- 1980 - One double socket connected to the...
