how to unhook my washing machine

I have purchased a new washing machine and prepaid for the old one to be taken away. Unfortunately, they wont take away the old one unless it is completely detached from the walls etc. The tenants are not very good at DIY but so far they have managed to detach most of the water pipes etc...

The key wont turn in my front door for at least a few attemp

The key wont turn in my front door for at least a few attempts. It is a Garrison cylinder security lock (the kind that needs a code in order for a key to be cut). I am not sure what the problem is. Any recs? Or, is there is a product I can squirt through the key hole to clean it out in case...

    mobile internet/wifi card

I dont need a phone line, I just want unlimited broadband access. What are my options if I am trying to avoid setting up a landline? 1) Is mobile internet the same as a wifi card? 2) Is the quality/speed of a wifi card as good as normal 'wired' broadband? 3)Any recs on suppliers. In order...

Broadband - reliable but cheapish companies.

I need to get broadband. I have signed up with BT for a phone line which will be installed in 10 days. Companies like talk talk are offering broadband for about 15gbp per month (£10 for line rental and £5 for broadband access). Since I am already obliged to continue line rental with BT are there...

    Silentnight or sealy

Would be interested to know people's experiences with regular mattresses such as silentnight and sealy. Do they need replacing in a year or two? p.s: I had to discount the ikea mattresses as they would not fit the bedframe in the room.

A reasonably priced mattress which wouldn't need replacing..

JohnD: Thanks for the Which report details. From my quick search on the net it appears that the RPI is the price they are being marketed at. At this point, I dont want to spend too much, as one of the previous tenants had back issues and brought her own mattress with her, and I can also...

A reasonably priced mattress which wouldn't need replacing..

A year ago I bought a new argos bed and mattress for the spare room which is being rented out. The new tenant of the room is now requesting a new mattress as the springs on it have already gone funny. I want to buy a new mattress for the room which is reasonably priced (not more than 140...

Are holes left by drawing pins in the wall hidden by paint?

So, my housemate is moving out. She had put up throws and blankets on the wall as decor and held them up with drawing pins. This has left a row of tiny holes. Lots of them. She has moved out now but she tells me that the holes will be easily covered by paint. Is this true or will we need some...

where can I find unglazed quarry tiles to use in oven.

I understand there might be lead and other nasty things in glazed tiles. I am looking for clay/terracotta as that seems a traditional material used for ovens and it might draw out moisture from the dough.

where can I find unglazed quarry tiles to use in oven.

I have been told that one way to create the clay oven taste for pizza/bread etc is to bake on an unglazed quarry tile which absorbs moisture from the dough. Anyhow, where is the best place to find an unglazed quarry tile (which has not been treated with lead)?

Storing paperwork in the garage while I am away

Does this also mean that plastic shelves are preferable to wooden shelves in a garage space.

Storing paperwork in the garage while I am away

I might be going abroad for a few years. I will rent out my house. If I store my comics and files in the detached garage will they be ok for a few years or do they go moldy? TIA

Can cavity wall insulation cause damp in the house?

I used to have a problem with damp in my house, but after someone drilled an airvent in the wall, this problem disappeared. I am now considering cavity wall insulation to save on heating bills but read somewhere that " cavity walls came in mainly because the gap between the bricks (cavity)...

Ways to reduce utility bills and make home energy efficient

My utility bills are a pain. Can anyone recommend some easy ways to insulate my home and/or improve its energy efficiency. Someone mentioned tin foil behind the radiators to reflect heat back into the house. Would this work?

Low pressure in one of the showers

yes, the problem is both the hot and cold water supply's. The cold storage is in the attic. Dont think the problem is debris. Would that not affect the taps as well?

Low pressure in one of the showers

My property is a 3 storey townhouse with the hot water boiler on the ground floor and the cold water in the attic. The pressure on the top floor bathroom was rubbish so I had a pump installed for that bathroom. Over time the pressure on the middle floor bathroom has also deteriorated. I'm...

SHould I raise the bathroom floor with concrete or timber

Good idea. I'll call building control. The builder does not envisage any problems, but I thought I should double check as it does seem rather final.

SHould I raise the bathroom floor with concrete or timber

For one thing, I was wondering if the weight of the cement would cause the existing floor to sink or something. I was speaking to a friend who said it might affect the strength of the foundation... I was also wondering why the original builders chose to use timber to raise the height of the...
