Kev that's true it does seem lot of hassle but thought it'd be easier in the long run to have constant access but your idea is better. What could I do about wanting to have access to the isolation valves which are higher up on the vertical runs of the pipes?

I didn't really think of it like that, but I wouldn't say the big switch isn't doing anything - it's controlling the power coming from the mains RCD, and allowing to isolate the point if necessary. Although I guess this could also be done from the mains. Haha possibly but I've been at work...
