    Natural gas detector?

I finally went round to his mum's house to measure up. Her hob is an AEG installed in 2008. Measures 50 by 58 cm. I should explain that he's not really into the internet so he's asked me to have a look online. There are a lot that measure 51 by 59.5 or 50 by 60 etc. Will the odd centimeter...

    Natural gas detector?

Ah right - I'll tell him. Is the swap over a simple job or does it depend on the make/size of the original one? I'm guessing there's a standard size, although I get the impression that it's quite old. I'll try to get some pictures/measurements over the weekend. Needs a GS engineer too, I expect.

    Natural gas detector?

Is there a natural gas detector available for domestic use? Friend's elderly mum is absent-minded rather than suffering from dementia etc. but occasionally leaves the gas hob unlit, causing gas to escape. Is it possible to fit a device to the hob so that this can't happen anyway? Or are there...

How many kW does electric shower use in Economy mode?

My Mira is rated at 9KW and when on Economy it uses about 4.4KW. So as Tricky says, just halve the rating to give an approximate figure. It is higher when first switched on but only for about 30 seconds.

    Replacement consumer unit necessary?

Can a washing machine be safely installed in a bathroom? I suppose a lot depends on the size of the room, but this one sounds as if it's quite small.

Do I need to replace my bathroom radiator?

Does this kind of corrosion cause a leak eventually? I have a radiator (same type) that is in pretty much the same state. We're waiting for a bathroom upgrade but it will be after next winter.

    Damaged sink delivered

Thanks for all the comments. I sent the photo to stress the kind of damaged goods that can and have been delivered. I wonder what would have happened if the company had denied all responsibility. In fact, they were great! I shall certainly use the format suggested when I sign in future and I...

    Damaged sink delivered

As I can't send a photo of the sink, here is one of my first set of damaged brackets.

    Damaged sink delivered

My neighbour never thought that her plumber had damaged the sink and she is very happy with the final result. He circled/underlined the items required in the shop's brochure and she went along to order them. (The dent in the sink is quite small and you only really notice it from a certain angle...

    Damaged sink delivered

My elderly neighbour has had a downstairs storage area converted into a shower room with toilet and a small sink. The latter is built into a small vanity unit. She bought the sink, shower etc. from a local shop (bathroom accessories etc.) after agreeing with the plumber what was needed. They...

    Win10 update

Sounds as if it's re-installed Win10. But it should prompt you to set up a password or PIN which is different from your Microsoft one. And please don't store important passwords on your hard disk - I speak from experience :(. Most disk/file encryption can be hacked, unless you pay for industry...

Dyson V8 vacuum cleaner - docking station

All sorted. I put a small screwdriver over the top of the fitting and levered it off.

Dyson V8 vacuum cleaner - docking station

I need to remove the metal charger tip from the fixing in the docking station so that I can release the cable and re-fit it behind in the channel provided. It is being held by something but I can't see what. Obviously, it needs to be secure in the docking station but this feels as if it's being...

Dyson V8 vacuum cleaner - docking station

I fitted the docking station for this and then pushed the end of the charger cable into the holder, forgetting that this should have been threaded along the back before fitting. Now the cable gets trapped when the station is folded into position for charging. I can't manage to remove the...

G mail sometimes not receiving from just one sender

A company I use is sending me emails that I'm rarely getting. I do get the occasional one, but most don't get through. If I email them my messages (usually with attachments) are flagged up as potentially dangerous (!) but they are received. When their IT people check what I've sent there's...

    Ladder security

The guy who fitted our fibre internet line had to go up to the eaves on his ladder. He asked if it was OK to drill a hole in the wall at ground level. He then secured his ladder to a fitting in the hole before he went up. I offered my foot on the bottom rung instead but he said that wasn't...

Oak fence panels - drilling question

Some years ago my builder fitted oak fence panels and concrete spurs in a section that was prone to waterlogging and wind damage. These have lasted well, not like some of the panels which are showing their age. I removed one and thought that it would take 10 minutes to fit a new one. The old...

    SIM card lock?

I watched a programme last night about someone whose mobile had been stolen and the SIM was put into another phone to access her data; the recommendation was to set a SIM PIN lock so that the card can't be used in another phone without the PIN. How secure is this?
