Whoa m8..at least put a few noggins in before u cut that joist ! A noggin is a short piece of wood ( usually 2x4 for joist ) but can be bigger and they go before the cut to brace that joist with the next one to stop any movement....cos basically u dont want any ! then cut out the joist and...

got an easier idea for you lolly whaty i used when i did mine...go and buy a cheap holesaw say 3 inch and mark round rose diameter you will need and using holesaw in drill of cours elol carefully cut out the extra..its a lot easier and you should be able to do it in about 7 cuts...

as eric said what you do now will have a huge result on the final outcome...rip off those old skirtings and chase the elec cables into the walls with new sockets and get the plasterer to skim the whole wall to the floor....pop on your new skirtings and sockets and voila...a coat of paint and it...

m8 just rip it off and replace it with cladding after ..gives a great finish painted or varnished....
