Old fluorescent light - do they have starters?

Hi, I have an old twin tube fluorescent strip light that doesn't come on anymore. The ends of the tubes light up and they look in decent condition. In our old place our lights had small cylindrical starters that usually needed replacing when this happened. But when I opened this light I don't...

    Hob extractor badly positioned?

If we were to remove the cupboard and put something like this (if we could find something in our price range) in the ceiling (we have enough void), extracting out the back wall, would this be a solution?

    Hob extractor badly positioned?

That would involve destroying the quite nice cornicing and drilling through a 6 inch thick concrete floor slab above, then running the pipe through the loft, which is converted. The cost is too high for us at the moment. The only other option is to have some independent extraction through the...

    Hob extractor badly positioned?

Hi all, We had our kitchen fitted a couple of years ago and at the time I flagged that I felt the extractor over the hob was not correctly positioned and that using the front ring would cause steam to go up the front if the cupboard and swell the wood(chip). They insisted it was correct. Two...

    Leak from channel or render?

Just because I like to finish a thread. The channel is done, the edges as well. The render will be redone in a couple of weeks. We decided to have it done properly in zinc so it could all be done at the same time, and they could create a fall to the downpipe. Massive storm this week, nothing...

    Wiring a Decorative ceiling rose

So I don't know if you have these in the UK, but in France you can get these plastic domes in all shapes, colours and sizes. Inside there is a domino thing for joining the cables that is a closed plastic box, and a cable gripper on the dome that stops the cord slipping through. The plastic cone...

    1150mm x 2600mm - Too small for french doors?

If you do go for either, and as this is the only "window" on the back of your house, I would somehow have the side panel (in my case) openable but also able to be latched slightly open. This means you can let a breeze in but not create a huge draft through your house or have the door flapping...

    1150mm x 2600mm - Too small for french doors?

We have these, which are old but you get the idea. 115cm wide. Only the large door opens. The neighbours have full glass ones without the small.panel at the bottom.

Solar Pond Pump - is there any point in having an accumulator battery?

Looking at all the info it seems that I should have paid more attention to the battery specs. I think it makes no sense to have the battery because it will take too long to charge. I should have chosen a battery that had an option to run the pump off the solar panel only and use the excess to...

Solar Pond Pump - is there any point in having an accumulator battery?

It has only been out for three days :). It is apparently protected against deep discharge or overload. It was in the sun yesterday but I moved it. Could this have finished it off? If I switch the system off and on again, the LED is green and it starts working, but the instructions say this is...

Solar Pond Pump - is there any point in having an accumulator battery?

This is what it says regarding charging.

Solar Pond Pump - is there any point in having an accumulator battery?

I bought it as a kit so you would hope so! I put the specs below. It looks like the solar panel is 10w, the pump uses 4 to 13W, the power of the solar panel is 10Wp (whatever that is). I can't find anything on the battery.

Solar Pond Pump - is there any point in having an accumulator battery?

Hi all, I have a small garden pond with two fountains: - one small run, with a floating pump just under the water surface that contains a battery. The fountain runs all day when there is sun, and once there isn't enough it runs 10 seconds every minute until the battery runs out. The solar...

    Repairing/Renovating Large Warderobe - Inlaid/Marquetry

I was thinking about this. But I am a bit worried that where there are gaps in wood (around the mirror and slightly on the doors) it would be very obvious. If I did paint it, could I fill these first?

    Repairing/Renovating Large Warderobe - Inlaid/Marquetry

Hi all, We have a very large (2m x 2m) "wardrobe" that we use in our entrance way for storage. We inherited with the house because the previous owner couldn't get rid of it. I am going to show my ignorance here - I can see on the inside that it is made of a reddish wood, but the outside has a...

    Leak from channel or render?

To follow up. The roofer came yesterday and took a look. He thinks it is coming from the fact that the channel, which is effectively the concrete floor slab that extends outside the building, has probably a small leak somewhere along the old repair, and the water is penetrating the slab and...

    Leak from channel or render?

I just saw this reply. The house is in France. There are gaps all along the zinc which I am sure is the source of slight damp above a different window and some other render that has blown. The zinc expands and contracts and the joins never stay together. We are going to get it redone. The...

    Leak from channel or render?

So for the minute should I clean it all up and then somehow reseal that end of the channel? And the render on the end wall, should I get it redone? Many thanks!

    Leak from channel or render?

I suppose. It grew this Spring and the damp has been there for two years and it is about a metre from the damp patch. I think if I went on the roof I could just sweep it off (too wet and windy lately). Debris accumulates in the corner and things grow in it.

    Leak from channel or render?

Hi all, We have a small damp patch in the corner or the room, which is never wet, but the paint flakes. For info, the wall is an outside wall, the building is concrete, the wall has some sort of plasterboard/insulation on the inside and the ceilings have a gap of about 20cm to the concrete...
