Would you install an edging strip after the skirting has gone on?

Install skirting before floor or afterward?

We have just had our rooms plastered and am looking to get them decorated next, and the floor laid afterward (laminate). The subfloor (ply) is relatively level. Should the skirting boards/architrave be fitted after the room has been painted/floor laid, or before? Skirting will be oiled oak...

Can automated lighting switches be fitted in a bathroom?

Looking to get some automated lighting such as the home easy brand from b&q. These would have a ceiling module to go in place of a junction box, and a wireless light switch that runs off batteries. Since the switch has no mains voltage/current, can it be installed in bathroom (where a normal...

Power Flush - is this needed for new boiler?

He did say it was a new boiler and radiators - would that require a powerflush as well?

    New Stopcock

Have got a new brass stopcock installed and wondering if there are any special precautions I should take to minimise any problems with it in the future. I've been told not to wind it fully open but close it a little bit so there is some play in the mechanism if it seizes up. Should I also conder...

Installing wall light wiring - after room has been skimmed

We have messed up a bit and didn't get wall light wiring put in our living room before it's been skimmed. How difficult is it to run a channel for the wire and then fill over to get a smooth finish? I know we've messed up on this, but we have to make a decision to forego wall lights...

    Vaillant 637 + 180l Unistor

I just did the sedbuk calculation and it came back with a figure of 22.9kw. So that means I can use a 24kw vaillant boiler? Is there any harm in oversizing it for future expansion and faster coil heat up times?

    Vaillant 637 + 180l Unistor

Thanks I think the boiler is oversized slightly, but the house is solid brick rather than cavity so heat loss is probably more than it should be. I've read some comments about the 637 only being able to modulate down to 12kw - we have 9 rads so I hope it's still efficient.

Method of supporting a Chimney Breast

We've just been through the process of having our chimney breasts removed throughout the house, but keeping the original stack. We employed the services of a structural engineer, and i'm glad we did, as our local BCO wasn't happy with the solution the SE had come up with. Structurally it may...

Washing Machine waste into rain drain

we're looking into moving our washing machine into the garage, but there isn't a foul drain close by for the waste water. We thought we may be able drain the waste into the rain drain the garage roof drains to. is this allowed? If not then we'll scrap this idea. Cheers

    Soundproofing

I'm currently going through the process of adding some soundproofing to our ceilings, and some internal walls. What i'm using are resilient bars and 15mm soundbloc plasterboard on the ceiling, and putting rockwool rw3 sound insulation in between the joists. This seems like the most cost...

    Best option for clean water

It's a 3 storey townhouse, which is now 4. They did a loft conversion and put the water tank in a housing on the new roof. The water comes from there and goes through a pump due to low pressure. I think you guys are right - we've got to fix it at the source. i might find out how possible it...

    Best option for clean water

Ideally we would do that, but it isn't an option unfortunately. This was an oversight when the place was refurbished recently.

    Best option for clean water

Hi, We are living in a place that has a cold water feed from a water storage tank that doesn't have a water byelaw kit, and therefore are not drinking the water from the cold tap. The main tap that is from the mains is a few flights of stairs away and we are filling up jugs of water in a...

    Plasma Ceiling Mount

Anyone had any experience with mounting a big plasma TV on a ceiling bracket? The TV we're looking at is around 42" and i've seen some ceiling mounts that have 4 bolts that attach to the ceiling (I presume to the joists). How easy are they to break, and would it bring the ceiling down if...

    Chimney breast removal

Have you got your local building control involved in removing your chimney breasts? We are currently in the process of doing this and our local BC have said we can't use gallows brackets, even though our structural engineeer thinks ít's ok to do this. our SE and BC are currently in talks to...

    Best in-line limescale filter

I'd like to install a limescale filter on the incoming mains before it goes into a combi boiler. Are there any filters out there that don't reduce flow that much and are quite effective? I've seen the whole house filtration systems, but not sure how much maintenance they'd need and how much...

    "Kemfix" chemical anchors

We've been told we need to use 'kemfix' M12 bolts for a support fixing in brick wall. Has anyone used these, and is there an equivalent I can buy in Screwfix etc? Also, how are these installed? Is it a DIY job? cheers
