We have messed up a bit and didn't get wall light wiring put in our living room before it's been skimmed. How difficult is it to run a channel for the wire and then fill over to get a smooth finish?

I know we've messed up on this, but we have to make a decision to forego wall lights or retro fit them if we can get a smooth finish (indistinguishable from the skim). If we did channel the wall, is it best to fill with multifinish, or aftermarket filler?

Thanks for your help with this

Oh dear, it's not the best way to do it that way round.
But it is done in re-wires and when additional circuits are added or extended all the time with old plaster, so new plaster is no different.
Chase you channel no deeper than one third of the walls depth, that is a building regulations for vertical chases, it is one sixth for horizontal chases, 20-25mm should give enough room to clip cable back and enough coverage for plaster, without cables coming to harm.
After fixing the cable, you can put a plastic cap over the cable to prevent damage to it by the trowel, but not really needed providing cables is fixed deep enough so trowel will not damage it.

Muliti-finish is fine for this job, if the chase is deep, you may need a base/browning coat to fill out, prior to skim, this will also help set the cables back.

if you're going to do it yourself you could use easifill, sands back nicely and should be easier to get a seamless finish/blend.
