    Dear Deckers......

I constructed this deck on concrete block 'stilts' to clear uneven ground. Built in 3* 2.4m square sections to form frames, and then added support every 35cm (very stable now with noggins). Also bolted together also with stainless bolts. All levelled now - ready for posts, handrails &...

    Dear Deckers......

Fell straight into that one :) Read in a guide that the screws need to go into every support the plank passes over - seems a bit excessive to me - especially with @ 16 supports. Think that I will try the ends and see if there is any bounce before going overboard with the screws. Thanks guys

    Dear Deckers......

Daft question this one, but can't seem to find a conclusive answer. I am nearing completion of a deck - 7mx3m and have 4.8m 14.4cm boards. In terms of screwing the boards down into the frame, is it best just to put couple of 2.5 inch screws into the ends and middle of the board when fixing...

    Old chestnut...50W decking lights

ban-all-sheds - wow - I am not even going to ask the price as I know I could not afford them (and have only 20cm riser clearance). Thanks for all the tips guys - I am off to have a rethink - I may invest the money that would have been required for laser eye surgery after looking down on those...

    Old chestnut...50W decking lights

These are proper decking lights - check out Screwfix, quote 62550. Now seem to be unavailable. Decking is 7m x 3m so did not want anything too weedy. May have another look at LED's - just though they may be a bit dim.

    Old chestnut...50W decking lights

Some advice please.. I am planning to put outside my back door a 2G IP56 waterproof socket, fed from a DG socket inside with an RCD wired plug and 1.5mm2 Artic cable (above ground, under deck). I then want to use 6x50W GU10 spots set into the deck, daisychained from one of the exterior...

Setting Breeze blocks - deck supports

Can anyone recommend the best material to set breeze blocks onto ground whilst levelling for garden decking. Was planning to use slab-fix to level and then post-fix around the block up to ground level to concrete in. Is this appropriate Many thanks

    Decking on gravel/shingle??

Thanks again guys - I decided to be risk-adverse and stand on set-in blocks. What is the best stuff to set the blocks into - slab-fix to set level, then post-crete around the block up to ground level.

    Decking on gravel/shingle??

Thanks Breezer - i would rather face a shifting deck than the wrath of the other half post BBQ cancellation.

    Decking on gravel/shingle??

Thanks guys. I was going to stand on buried breeze block pillars as suggested. Missus has other ideas in terms of estimated completion time. Aside from obvious timber longevity, would there be any implications with standing straight onto shingle (approx 2 inches on a level compacted earth...

    Decking on gravel/shingle??

I am about to construct a simple deck for the garden (@2.4m*7.2m, in 3x modular pieces). There is already a dpm on the area I want to cover, it is flat, and covered with decorative gravel/shingle. To save a monster hoard job, can the decking be constructed on top of the gravel. Drainage is...

    Thermostatic or not???

What is the easiest way to tell whether the mixer shower in my en-suite is thermostatic. This unit was installed when house built in June 98. Also, what are the key h/c supply differences with a Thermo unit. Many thanks

Exterior deck lighting/spare exterior socket wiring

Thanks all, Forgot to mention - the 2G socket in the kitchen is already RCD equipped - was originally just going to run the cabling for the lighting to outside, but thought an exterior weatherproof socket was a more flexible idea. Think that I will 'downgrade' the kitchen RCD switch to a...

Exterior deck lighting/spare exterior socket wiring

Some advice please. I am planning to run a feed from a 2G socket to a weatherproof 2G socket outside to cater for some exterior low-wattage (30W x 6 decklights) and leave a spare socket for summer etertainment/lawnmower use. Plan to use weatherproof (IP56) socket, appropriate conduit &...

Newbie - Hot Water & Radiator loss after drain-down

Croydoncorgi/kevplumb - just want to say thanks for the advice given. Bled the pump and cylinder vent and hot water/radiators piping hot. Sadly, the radiator I had to remove seems a bit cool so may be sludged - do you know of any fluid I can use. Seem to recall that there was a product...

Newbie - Hot Water & Radiator loss after drain-down

Thanks for the warning kevplumb - most definitely will leave alone. Will check for the bleedpoints on the pipework and loosen pump screw in morning to check for air.

Newbie - Hot Water & Radiator loss after drain-down

Thanks for the tips guys - now I really know how much I dont know. I did not have the 3-port valve in mid position (3 port is a Danfoss HSA3 - 2 outward labels manual and auto) when filling. Croydoncorgi - have you been in my house? - fairly accurate explanation of the floorplan. I had...

Newbie - Hot Water & Radiator loss after drain-down

Firstly, great forum guys - just been a voyeur and enthusiastic DIY'er, though never thought I would be posting for help. Just had to drain down my CH to fix radiator pipe dislocation by my 2-year old. Now I have repaired, I have switched the central heating back on, I have no heat to...
