    Finishing a hearth.

I'm on the point of laying the last 5" or 6" of concrete for a hearth for a wood burning stove and all the advice I see is to make the hearth level with the floorboards. I would like the hearth to finish up tiled and about 2" above the level of the floor. Would it make sense to put an inch or...

    Fireplace surprise.

Got quite a surprise at the "lintel" for this chimney breast, just odd bricks hacked about to form sort of keystones. Before I hacked the thin layer of cement render off I was just intending to Stihl saw and chisel flat the cement/brick pillars at each side to get the wall level for plastering...

    Belle mixer problem.

Thanks again. Yeah, I was coming round to that conclusion - either valve seats, duff springs or broken rings. Lack of sucking seemed to be the problem, isn't it always. I did de-coke the engine and that was probably a mistake as the carbon round the valves was probably sealing them!. It...

    Belle mixer problem.

Hi, I was given an old but clean Belle mini mix 150 with a B&S petrol engine and thought I was in clover. Problem is it starts first or second pull with full choke, needs the choke opening about halfway, then cuts out after about 30 seconds, then repeats the process!. I've put in a new...

    Metal back boxes?.

Hello again, All our sockets and switches are wall mounted and I want to flush mount them. I'm busy chasing for cables and cutting recesses for the boxes (by the way the Armeg that I borrowed works a treat in Victorian softish brick). Can I re-use the existing plastic back boxes or is there a...

Peugeot 306 "S" reg 2.0 petrol timing belt questio

Hi, My son just got the above car with about 90,000 miles on the clock. Could anyone advise the mileage the timing belt should be changed at, and any idea of the Peugeot price for this?.

    Rotten roof timbers.

Deluks, I never realised just how much condensation these tubs of water were causing until I read your post and started poking about. Thanks.

    Rotten roof timbers.

Many thanks for that, it makes it sound straighforward. I did wonder if there would be a danger of some sag in the ridge if I just removed and replaced them one by one, but after reading your post and thinking logically, if the tiles are off there's no weight on the trusses. Yep, the wall plate...

    Rotten roof timbers.

Hi, I'm renovating a 1920's 1½ storey end terrace and the ½ storey part has the roof timbers shown in the pic, obviously from water ingress over some time. The two on the right are probably saveable when dried out, the two on the left are rotten for about four feet up but not actually falling...

    Senco screw gun.

Hi, I've been given a Senco DS275 screw gun, 18volt and looks almost new. Tried it out with 35 x 3.9 drywall screws and 12.5mm plasterboard and it's a dream. Would this tool be powerful enough to screw 2"x1" wooden strips to level off the ceiling joists before plasterboarding ?.

    Insulation between ceiling joists.

Thanks, will it be OK to run the lighting cables amongst this stuff or will they have to be in plastic ducting or something?.

    Insulation between ceiling joists.

Hi, I've taken down the lath and plaster ceiling of the ground floor of a 1920s terraced house and am just about to put up plasterboard. The ceiling joists are 8" deep and have thin wood slats fixed about halfway down them to support a thin layer of clinker and other stuff, obviously as a...

Pilot or clearance holes in chipboard when screwing down.

I've got some 22mm chipboard to put down on timber joists, using 6 x 70mm chipboard screws, should I drill pilot or clearance holes in the chipboard or doesn't it really matter?. Sorry, this should obviously have been in floor forum shouldn't it.

    "Great Stuff" sealant query.

Just got a can of this from Screwfix and noticed that it says it will seal itself shut if sitting unused for over 2 hours "and may not be restarted." Does this really mean I've got to use the can up in one go?.

    Levelling Joists.

Hi, I've knocked two rooms into one, done the solums and am now trying to get the joists down. I need two lengths meeting on the centre sleeper wall (the remains of the dividing wall. I've bolted the first two lengths together and started at one side of the room trying to level them off but...
