    Moving a wall light

Good afternoon all. I'm looking to move a wall light about 1M to the right of where it is currently sat (the door opens and only just avoids hitting the bulb, and we want to put a shade on it). I've just opened the light up and can see that the person that did it previously rant he cable...

Support a marble breakfast bar, suggestions please

Good afternoon all. We are in the process of getting a new kitchen installed (in a couple of weeks) and I have a question. We are using marble work tops. The units are from howdens (if that matters) In the middle of the kitchen we will have an island that is one set of units deep and...

    Connecting Cistern to Toilet

Good afternoon all I've just bought a new toilet, and am looking to get it installed. I notice that where the cistern connects to the toilet, there is no washer supplied to stop the water leaking when flushed. On the previous toilet there was an unusual kinda putty/rubber solution that...

Marble Tile - Recommended Grout/ Adhesive (and other q's)

Good evening all. I'm in the process of redecorating our bathroom and have chosen Marble tiles for the wall's (and riven slate for inside the shower, may reconsider the use of these). Glueing to Hardwall? We've had the walls plastered, and it's been finished with hardwall, as opposed to...

Laying Solid Oak Flooring - Bathroom

I thought it may be related to preventing proper air flow and allow moisture to sit on the wood sub floor in that manner. I'll check out the Timbermate stuff. Again (or if I haven't) thanks for you time and help on this.

Laying Solid Oak Flooring - Bathroom

Quick question, is there a reason why you say not to have a DPM? I'm looking at a few noise reducing underlay and all of the ones I've looked at so far say that they act/have a built in DPM.

Laying Solid Oak Flooring - Bathroom

I understood that, but had thought it would not be flexible enough. we live and learn :D I take it, that using normal PVA glue to stick the tongue and groove and making sure that we mop up pools of water will be sufficient to seal the the planks? The tray is some sort of solid material...

Laying Solid Oak Flooring - Bathroom

I think I've miss-understood the expansion gap, or the restrictions associated with it. So, it's "ok" to seal the gap between the tile (resting above the level of the wood), and the wood flooring with silicone? I had assumed that it would need to move freely, and that the silicone would...

What type of boiler/ system should I use?

I'm some what shocked that I'd never thought of that previously, I assume there is no reason why a combi boiler could not be used to heat the water in the tank. The pressure is good, and more importantly the flow rate is not bad, i think around 25l/m i think, and I've still to replace the...

What type of boiler/ system should I use?

Only by 6 sqm :p which isn't THAT much bigger, and we are still waiting on the drawings (what a night mare that's been!), so it's all rough estimations at the moment. it's effectively the width of the house + garage, and about 5M's out from the wall, so around the 45sqm mark.

Laying Solid Oak Flooring - Bathroom

Unfortunately based on where i've placed outlet pipes on the wall for the taps, i can't raise the floor by too much, so plywood is out of the question, but hardboard and planing/sanding down any excessively sharp ridges. Thank god for 2m spirit levels! :) Regarding the gap around the...

Laying Solid Oak Flooring - Bathroom

Thanks for your comments, Wood You Like Based on your feedback and things we've read else where, we are returning the solid would and will be replacing it with an engineered wooden flooring. To be honest I had no realised that there were those two types, I only thought it was either...

What type of boiler/ system should I use?

Hi Kevin Thanks for this. I've done some looking, and the impression I seem to be getting is that system boilers (is that the right term) are no incredibly reliable. Though I thought they were meant to be more reliable than Combi's. Am I mistaken? We are getting an extension...

    Cement base for shower tray

Thanks for that, it puts me at ease to an extent, and yes I think it is a Foreign language derived instruction manual. I've got a plastersizer (used for plastering), so that should allow me to easily level the mix without over wetting it. I believe its WBP and 18mm thick (same as the rest...

    Cement base for shower tray

Good afternoon all. I'm in the process of doing up my bathroom, which is a wooden floor (raised floor I think is the term) and have a question regarding "anti crumble" additive to cement when putting down a shower tray. I'm placing a 800*1200 shower tray on to a single piece of ply as per...

Is it normal to ask for a 50% deposit before starting work..

There was a bit on the BBC Rogue Traders (or was it the don't get done, do don or some such rubbish). I can't remember the exact numbers, but the guy basically said, not to pay too much up front, as it makes it very difficult later on if there is a problem. I think it went along the lines...

Designer vs Standard radiators inc output

heyah. I've spent a bit of time looking at towel radiators after doing up the bathroom in the flat, and experiencing the "design" flaws. We used a fairly average white towel radiator for the flat, and when it came to using it we found that it was a real pain to actually USE the damnable...

What type of boiler/ system should I use?

Good day all. We are currently re-fitting our house part of this includes refurbishing the bathroom, adding an additional shower in a wet room, and a significant kitchen extension (6mx4m) which I'd be looking to have under floor heating powered off the central heating. Additionally I'd be...

Laying Solid Oak Flooring - Bathroom

Hi All I'm currently going through the process of renovating my bathroom, and am looking to put down some solid wood flooring (http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?isSearch=true&fh_search=03501085&x=0&y=0). It's a first floor room, on a suspended floor (traditional beams plus floor boards...
