    Oil boiler noise on start

Hi, it's a sealed system. I've just been round and bled the radiators (haven't done this for a while). Two of the radiators had a fair bit of air in them, so hopefully they're now full with water and I've topped the pressure back up to 1 bar. If there is a provision for venting the coil, will...

    Oil boiler noise on start

Hi, I got up early yesterday morning and observed more closely. The noise isn't coming from the boiler, but from the tank. It's a short-lived 'juddery' type of sound, loud enough to wake us up. If, as you say, it's an air lock, what's the likely solution? Keep bleeding the radiators? Is it...

    Oil boiler noise on start

It's hard to describe, but it's a 'banging' type sound. The first time I heard it, I thought something had fallen over onto a bare wooden floor. I'm not sure that's helpful, but I certainly get the feeling there's some sort of impact happening somewhere.

    Oil boiler noise on start

Hi, I have an oil boiler that's about 30 years old and also had a new direct feed water tank fitted in the summer to improve water pressure. Everything is working well, except that now I have switched the heating on for the winter, there's a loud noise shortly after the boiler fires up every...

    Plumbing in new radiators

Hi, Thanks for the ideas, I like the idea of the hoover clearing the water from the pipes, as we have a wet hoover available to us. Is there a fitting available that gets you from 'hoover bore' to 15mm copper, or is this best 'self-created'? Regards Jever

    Plumbing in new radiators

Hi, My dad has a Grant 26e external combination oil fired boiler with the water pressure provided directly by the mains water and he would like to upgrade a couple of his radiators to match the others, which (I assume) ultimately means draining down the system and changing the pipework (some of...

Fitting out a walk in wardrobe

Morning, I have a walk in wardrobe (about 1.4m x 2.2m) that is currently empty that I'd like to fit out with storage for clothes/shoes. I've seen some quite nice bespoke solutions on the internet and I know that IKEA also have a system, but I was wondering if I could buy the wood and fittings...

    Boiler not firing up

Hi Freddo, Mr Therm, I found the cutout button and reset it - it was on top of the panel at the top, once I had taken the casing off. Anyway, the heating is now back on and you have spared me and my family the discomfort of a cold evening, thanks very much. I'm rather embarassed to say that...

    Boiler not firing up

Hi Mr Therm, Thanks for the reply. I can't see any lockout lamp being lit, so I guess I'm in luck there. I've been looking around for the overheat/limit stat and can't find any popped-out buttons. Could it be inside the Honeywell box, hence I need to unscrew the lid to locate it? I've...

    Boiler not firing up

Hi, I've just spent the afternoon moving a central heating radiator upstairs in my house and to do this, I drained down the heating system so that only the downstairs radiators had water in them. I then went ahead and changed the pipework and then turned on the valve into the f&e tank to fill...

    Trap for my shower tray

Hi BK, Madrab, I contacted ViccyP on this issue today and was told in contrast to your advice that with this waste, no trap is required. That their website suggested I buy a p-trap seems not necessarily to have been relevant to my case - this seems glaringly obvious to me now, having thought...

    Trap for my shower tray

Hi Madrab, Thanks, will leave the p-trap out in that case. By the way, is there something I should know about ViccyP? I got the whole bathroom from them and everything seems ok so far. Jever

    Trap for my shower tray

Hi, If you follow the link I posted and click on the tab “You will need”, it shows the shallow p-trap. Maybe this is just computer generated advice? Jever

    Trap for my shower tray

Hi, I’m about to install a shower tray and have bought one of these traps to go with it: https://victoriaplum.com/product/90mm-slimline-shower-tray-waste-sw90a The instructions refer to it as a bottle trap and it appears to have a trap built into it. Nonetheless, the Victoria Plum website...

    Skirtings and architraves

Hi, I'm doing a refurbishment project and will be replaing all of the skirtings and architraves, as I don't like the existing ones. Once I've chosen what I want, I'll need to come up with a a list of quantities. I'm assuming that for the architraves, I just count the number of doors and the...

    Honeywell Evohome System

Probably no a good idea to reply to my own post, but these look pretty good to me: http://www.screwfix.com/p/drayton-trv4-white-chrome-trv-15mm-angled-l-s/34362 Is £22 a reasonable price, or should I expect to do better? Jever

    Honeywell Evohome System

Thanks everyone for the replies, I feel far more in a position to make a decision on this. Given all the other projects I'm tackling and the added bonus of VAT at 5%, I think if I go for it, I'll get a specialist to tackle it. I have to say, it appears to me that this technology is in its...

    Honeywell Evohome System

Hi, I currently have an oil-fuelled heating system that was installed in the 80's that I'm thinking about updating. The radiators are regulated by old Honeywell thermostatic valves that are pretty ugly and I'd like something that looks a bit more modern and enables me to regulate the...

    Cleaning bricks/roof tiles

Hi, I live in a house that was built in the 80s and am trying to update the appearance. I don't think the previous owner did a lot of maintenance and so the concrete roof tiles have a lot of moss and other green/lichen and the bricks/cement joints have a layer of lichen or salt on them...
