Shower on separate RCD - will it help

I recently wired up some wall lights/ceiling lights. (Wall lights had never been connected since I moved in). Anyway, i think there is a bit of neutral-borrowing going on, but the wiring in the place is a nightmare (JB's under floorboards etc). I don't think I could sort it out without re-wiring...

Anyone know where i can get one of these, or similar?... RCD

Morning! Does anyone know what if there is a brand of RCD that I can use instead of one of this Volex, or where I could get a Volex RCD? Tried a couple of local wholsalers who were not very helpful. I do not want to disconnect until i have a replacement as down-time is an issue. Thanks Alex

    3V from capacitive coupling?

Hi John, As you say, I really doubt that the capping is earthed (I'm surprised there is capping at all!). I will check the N-E voltage when I get home. The switch is a 2-way 3-gang, but only the 1-way are being used. There is one supply into the switch and the other 2 gangs are linked at...

    3V from capacitive coupling?

Thanks Eric. I'm guessing then that the only other thing it could be is low insulation resistance resistance on the lighting cable.

    3V from capacitive coupling?

Just taking an aspect which did not get answered in a previous thread .... can the galv capping on a lighting cable buried in a wall, measure 3V between it and the Neutral of the circuit, as a result of capacitive coupling? Thanks

3-gang switch, non-RCD circuit tripping RCD, etc.

...Thanks Spark. There is a separate MCB for the lights (not on the RCD way). You are right though, the runs are all over the place.

3-gang switch, non-RCD circuit tripping RCD, etc.

Morning all, I tried to fit 3 wall lights last night to existing cables. Lights have not been connected since I moved in. A 3-gang switch controls 2 ceiling light and 3 wall lights. The ceiling lights each have their own switch so I assume the 3rd controls the 3 wall-lights. 2 lights are...

    Fault-finding ...Dishwasher involved

Morning all, My friend has asked me to have a look at a double-socket. He recons that when he plugs the dishwasher in, the RCD trips. Also, there are signs of heat damage (black) on the socket. So, it could be the dishwasher with a leakage current or a loose connection in the socket...

    Spirit level calibration

...ok, thanks for the responses. Believe it or not, the question was as a result of looking for a good quality level, and finding that even some of the expensive ones have adjustable vials for easy calibration! As mentioned above, all i need to do is turn the level around to see if the bubble...

    Spirit level calibration

...thanks John, I think i understand. .... so, when you first measure a straight line on a wall say, the glass tube is this way up... n .... the bubble is in the centre at the top (this bit is obvious). What you are saying is that when you turn it over , and put the level up to the same...

    Spirit level calibration

Hi I just want to buy a spirit level for small job positioning like shelves, socket outlets, wall lights etc. I am confused in descriptions for such tools by the comment "easy to calibrate". How the heck would you calibrate the horizontal setting and how can you be sure the calibration of a...

    Asbestos roof query

Hi chaps. I spend 45 minutes per day exercising in my garage. The garage has an asbestos roof. The roof is not disturbed by the activity apart from the movement of air, but I was wondering if prolong exposure in this enclosed space could present a health risk from the asbestos. Maybe you...

    Windows Media Player

I've had this situation recently with a DVDRW/CD drive. It's not a new one but i guess it could be the same problem. DVD's are recognised, play and writeable. However, CD's are not recognised/do not auto-play etc. I concluded that the laser is dead or dirty (following investigation). Aparently...

    What could cause this...?

I was in a building this morning and was asked to have a quick look at a issue whereby, when the light is switched on in one room, the flourescent in the next room goes off for a second, before re-lighting as normal. This is only a recent problem apparently. Any ideas what might cause this...
