On the one he sent to us: New consumer unit Additional sockets Seperate kitchen ring main I'm not sure where the certificate is from the council but I can go and check that if you want?

    Were we ripped off?

I couldn't state this as fact but I think it was new, or rather existing but he did wire the downstairs lighting and upstairs lighting into the consumer unit seperately so I'd imagine he had been there as it was part of the downstairs lighting and all the lights spur off of that light...

    Were we ripped off?

Ok, so I'll speak to my neighbour about potentially issuing a minor works for emergency remedial work and then take it from there. Thanks for all of the advice everyone.

    Were we ripped off?

Yes but it doesn't specify it is a rewire. It just specifies the details, ie. how many additional sockets are being installed etc. So the specifics of the rewire. Every time we spoke to him he said 'full rewire'. I feel so naive now, I thought we'd been really careful and checked things...

    Were we ripped off?

The old wiring is in the old colours yes, at least that is what our neighbour said. I will talk to our neighbour about it, cause really all we can show is all of the old cabling. And even then although we hired him for a full rewire, isn't it still very much our word against his?

    Were we ripped off?

I've just had a quick read and the documentation implies that only matters of 'safety' will be considered and that they need to be able to verify our complaint by an onsite visit. The only thing we can 'prove' is the amount of legacy cabling which in itself isn't actually dangerous. Should...

    Were we ripped off?

Well there we go, I know even less about electrics than I thought and I didn't think I knew much at all. Thanks for the advice, I'll look into the process for sending a report. Sadly we don't have pictures of anything which I'm kicking myself for now. At the time it was a case of 'we're...

    Were we ripped off?

I've just done a quick search on the NICEIC register and he is listed as a domestic installer. We have also received the domestic electrical installation certificate. He sent us an e-copy and we've since received the one from the council. Edit: Just to add we may not know alot about...

    Were we ripped off?

Is there anything particular you'd like me to look for/find out? Obviously I wont mention anything that can be directly tied to this person but I'm sure I can give you more details.

    Were we ripped off?

Yep, 3 quotes and this one was marginally higher than the cheapest one we were given.

    Were we ripped off?

I think it's a bit of both. Partly I feel like perhaps we were deliberately miss sold something. Ie. he sold us a full rewire and charged us accordingly, but hasn't actually carried out a full rewire. So that was one big point our neighbour made. The completely other point is all of the...

    Were we ripped off?

We recently had our 'whole house rewired' (the electricians words). The house has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 living room and 1 kitchen. We paid £2000 for a 'full rewire' as it was described. - The electrician separated the kitchen onto it's own ring main. - Added around 12 Sockets -...

PVCu door can't have argon filled glass?

That's what I thought, thanks for the response. I'll have a think about whether I want argon or not... tbh it is only a small amount of glass. http://www.doorcentrediy.co.uk/epages/es145542.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es145542/Products/dp011 This is the door I'm considering buying.

PVCu door can't have argon filled glass?

Hi, I don't know much about doors but am trying to do like for like quotes online. One company has offered me a basic cheap PVCu door WITH argon filled glass. And the other said you can't do that on PVCu doors, only composite as it comes as a sealed unit rather than set into the frame...

    Exterior door standard size 2085mm?

Thanks for the reply. We have a bit of room to play with as it's a step down into the house. But the door does open inwards so I'll have to see just how much space we do actually have. Fingers crossed we can get one from Wickes as there are some nice looking doors on 15% off at the moment.

    Exterior door standard size 2085mm?

Hi, I'm about to buy a new door for my house and would like to go down the self buy/fit option. However having measured the frame (following guides online of brick to brick) it is just over 2000mm (can't remember the exact measurement right now). And all the pre-hung doors in the shops...

What colour gravel/slate should I put down?

I could do with some opinions. My driveway looks like this: This isn't my driveway but it is a similar colour and in the same herringbone style. I have a strip that runs down my driveway which I want to line with pebbles or slate but I can't decide on what the best colour would be...

Recommend me a paint + primer combo for new skirting + doors

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure whether to go for water based or oil, and not knowing anything really about painting stumped for oil as based on other posts I've read it gives the better finish. But I will definitely look into your recommendations. :)

Where are the supports on my staircase?

After much thought we've worked out that the breeze block wall is an extension of the bathroom wall. Therefore the horizontal beam is in effect part of the supporting structure for 3 joists which run under the bathroom floor and part of the bathroom wall. Are we likely to be ok simply...

Recommend me a paint + primer combo for new skirting + doors

I'm going to be replacing alot of the skirting in my new house and would like recommendations on what primer + paint combo to use. I'm also repainting the existing woodwork + doors. I'd like a nice slightly shiny finish that can be wiped down easily and wont yellow badly (I've heard the dulux...
