    Rendering quote

Stainless mesh is out of the question - its 5 times the price, so instead of £300 it's £1500. NHBC do say to put a strip of dpc between each batten and the mesh, to protect from the swelling mentioned by rouchcaster, but I forgot to do it  Not entirely sure how I'd go about taking...

    Rendering quote

I'll take more (better) photos tonight of what he's managed to do, and the construction thus far. I have not seen examples of his work, he was recommended to us by one of my girlfriend's friends. He did say he's not rendered on this type of construction before, at which point alarm bells...

As in, attach another layer of mesh over the whole house. And then he's going to charge us another £1000 to do a third (base) coat. All seems very disappointing to me :( It's mesh on timber battens and counterbattens on a timber framed house. Here's a photo (I hope) so you can see what I mean:

    Rendering quote

Just had a call from the guy who gave us the quote, he started the job today (I am at work). He says the house will need 'double meshing' as a single layer wont hold the render (?) and also he will need to do 3 coats instead of 2 :o Would that make sense? I've never heard of that before...

DIYing hot and cold water pipework in new house

I have no intention of going anywhere near any of the unvented cylinder pipework - my question was specifically about the hot/cold water pipework before and after it. All of the heating system install is being done by the people supplying it.

DIYing hot and cold water pipework in new house

We are having air source heatpump, unvented cylinder, underfloor heating supplied and installed as a complete system by professionals. Separately, the pipework to the appliances and the taps is either going to be done by a plumber or I'm going to have a go at it myself. Im just asking if...

'myself' is what the chap giving us the quote wrote - as in he will supply mixer etc :) It's about 100 sq m.

    Rendering quote

Can I just quickly check a quote we have had for the rendering of our new build, it looks like the right kind of stuff to me - but I admit I dont really know what I'm talking about :) Quote for proposed work in Cheltenham: - Supply & fit all new stainless steel angle & bellcast beads. -...

    Expamet - mesh or riblath?

Well yes I know sand/cement will be cheaper - but fundamentally attaching something brittle to something flexible cant be all that good an idea can it? I mean I know the mesh will hold it all together but surely over time it'll just crack all to pieces?

    Expamet - mesh or riblath?

We'll shortly be battening and counterbattening out our timber frame walls to receive a rendered finish. There are two types of metal lathing, one is just a diamond mesh (what I'd refer to as simply 'Expamet'), the other is ribbed ('Riblath'). In galvanised form anyway, the riblath is twice the...

    warm roof construction

In what way does a warm deck do away with the requirement for a vcl? Why would you want to buy two lots of plywood? If you have 150mm of insulation, you've got to have some pretty long screws and some pretty accurate drilling to get them into the joists. Can't you glue the insulation...

    Hmm, self-build self-wiring consideration

I've asked NHBC the question - they said they require a certificate that the electrical installation was by a competent person. Im pretty sure all the NHBC do is inform the LABC at various stages and show them the various certificates etc. There are several independent Building Control...

    Hmm, self-build self-wiring consideration

We've paid all our fees to the NHBC, and all our correspondence is with them. I will ask our Inspector about the electrics next time he is on site :) I've got a self-build book out of the library which goes into electrics, it is from a while ago though, but I'm learning a bit :)

    Hmm, self-build self-wiring consideration

The ceiling is 300dp engineered timber joists, with a ply deck over, with rigid board insulation on top of the ply deck. So the roof is not a problem - basically a 300dp void above the plasterboard ceiling. The walls are 200mmm thick, yes, full of recycled plastic insulation. Building...

    Hmm, self-build self-wiring consideration

I have never done anything to do with electrics before, and had not previously considered doing any of the wiring myself, but speaking to someone recently it seems they think I could do most of the first fix wiring on our new timber frame house myself, with some advice. Earlier in the build...
