Which of these (many) things might have asbestos?

Hi DIYNotian. Sorry to raise this thread but how did you get on with the test results?

Asbestos risk of loose insulation in loft.

Thanks for that - unfortunately, it looks like the stuff (looking at google photos) is called vermiculite. It was, apparently, only a single mine in the US (Libby) that provided contaminated batches. Question, now, is whether my house was unlucky enough to have obtained it from there.

Asbestos risk of loose insulation in loft.

Hi there. A couple of years ago, I decided to bag up all the loose insulation that lay between the rafters in my loft. I then replaced it with rolls of insulation. It was dusty as anything and I used a regular paper face mask. I recently read that some of this stuff can contain asbestos and...

Better alternative to jigsaw for straight cuts (Edit - Which track saw)?

Thanks ever so much for that, JobAndKnock - it had not even occurred to me to actually make some cutting stands. I also checked out Peter Millard's videos - really interesting. I tried to order one of the Titan saws from Screwfix and noted that they had disappeared from their website. I...

Better alternative to jigsaw for straight cuts (Edit - Which track saw)?

Have done a complete u-turn and I think I can justify the extra expense and go for a track saw, after all. Any models to consider/avoid?

Better alternative to jigsaw for straight cuts (Edit - Which track saw)?

Whoops that was a close one - I definitely want a 240v version. Thank you. What else should I be looking for in terms of wattage, cutting depth, brand etc?

Better alternative to jigsaw for straight cuts (Edit - Which track saw)?

Thanks very much for everyone's further comments on this. Having done a lot more research, I think that whilst I would really love a track saw, I am not sure I can justify the extra expense, given that I am not going to be doing huge amounts of cutting. I think I am going to go with a circular...

Better alternative to jigsaw for straight cuts (Edit - Which track saw)?

Thanks everyone. Really helpful information - I had never even heard of a track/plunge saw. The idea of a circular saw, with a homemade guide does seem very appealing. Is the only difference between a track saw and a regular circular saw that the track saw has the guide built into it?

Better alternative to jigsaw for straight cuts (Edit - Which track saw)?

Having used my trusty Bosch jigsaw for everything I do, involving wood, I have decided to add something a bit more bespoke to my tool shed. The problem, I find, is that jigsaws are just not particularly accurate. Most of what I have made, looks less than professional as edges are never...

Advice on replacing two mortice deadlocks

Thanks ever so much for that, John - I owe you a bundle. I shall give them a ring to check, as suggested, and let you know what they say.

Advice on replacing two mortice deadlocks

Wow - very impressive. As you say, the Locksonline lock does seem to have a different bolt (I never would have noticed that in a million years) - I assume that the anti-saw rods must be the superior? Plus, if the brass key is better too, I shall definitely get that model and do exactly as you...

Advice on replacing two mortice deadlocks

Unfortunately, I did not get covers for the outside of the door until for quite a few months after they had been installed and I never did get them for the inside - shall make sure to do this for the new locks. Furthermore, when the carpenter asked me what locks I wanted, I made the mistake of...

Advice on replacing two mortice deadlocks

Thanks everyone for your advice - apologies for having not been back on here sooner. Having had a look at the locks, I have concluded that they are knackered - I have tried both sets of keys in each and neither work properly in either lock. My wife also tried to use the locks whilst I wasn't...

Advice on replacing two mortice deadlocks

Hello. I was burgled about six years and I hired a carpenter to put in a new back door with two deadlocks and a sashlock. About six months ago, they both started to go a bit funny and now neither of them open from the inside (and one of them has to be wiggled, from the outside, to open). I...

How to build/install a side gate - what materials?

Hi. I need to put a sidegate down the side of our house, for security reasons. The gap is 3400mm wide and the post will need to be 2000mm to match the height of my neighbour's fence. I was thinking of putting four posts in, with a gate between the middle two. The drive is solid concrete...

Advice on running network cable throughout my house.

Whilst I really like the idea of mesh, my house is small enough (and convenient enough) that running network cables is not going to be major job. Very nice solution, though. Out of interest, do you notice any realtime slowdown from not using cabling?

Advice on running network cable throughout my house.

I would be really grateful for some advice on hard-wiring my home network. I currently use an 8-port switch, but am thinking of upgrading it to one of these...

Mortice lock replacement that is lockable from outside.

I have spent ages trying to find out what the name of this lock is (deadlock, deadbolt, mortice bolt) and it seems that the correct term is a mortice bolt, like this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/era-mortice-bolt-kit/8043t The locks are both very old and need replacing. I was wondering whether...

    Which bathroom paint?

Hello, I have a small bathroom that has no extractor fan in it (yet - hope to look into this during summer of next year). Because of this, we get terrible mold (especially, when it is too cold to keep the window in there open for long). I need to repaint it but have no idea what to look out...

Is a Raspberry Pi-based security camera worth it?

I was thinking of installing a few security cameras to my house for a bit of added security. I have a Linux server that is always on, so my initial thought was to buy a couple of RPis with Pi cameras, place them in an empty camera housing and run "Motion" on them (I have found quite a few...
