Should the controller be at switch level outside the bathroom or at floor level like sockets? What's normal practise?

    Choosing good interior doors...

I definitely want solid instead of moulded and I also want to paint them so, presumably knotty pine is the most cost effective option I'm looking at some knotty pine doors at about £30 each at B&Q. Will knots need to be treated and does anyone have any experiences with B&Q doors? Wickes also...

How to clad summer summer house/study

I'm going to build a summerhouse/study in teh garden. I'm comfortable doing thefoundations, frame, insulation and all internal bits. The one thing I can't decide on is how to finish it. I was thinking of tongue and groove boards painted but they're quite pricey and my local DIY sheds don't...

Access to neighbours land for building work

It's already got a concrete slab edging which I need to replace so this is presumably classed as build, not maintenance. Thanks guys

Best time of yeaar to cut evergreen bush

I don't know the name, but it's one of the very common bushes grown at teh front of houses around the border. I need to trim it back quite heavily - is it better for the plant to do it now in the dormant season or wait until it starts growing?

    Minimum size for understairs WC

As part of some other work that's being done I'm going to get one fitted and get BC to sign it off. What's a recommended minimum size for the floorspace? It's 800 wide and at the back where the toilet will sit it'll be 1400 tall. I could make it 2500 long but it would eat into the kitchen area

Energy efficient lights in rewire - Part L clarification

I'm having an extension done and will rewire the whole house too. Building regs Part L1 have changed to stipulate that 25% of light outlets must be low energy (displaying the L symbol on packaging) for extensions That's okay, but a few questions if anyone knows the answer to these...

Access to neighbours land for building work

Yeah - you're right. I could do it from my side, but it's harder and I'd need to board out etc on my side, so would lose about 3 inches. Doesn't sound like a lot, but I'd rather not lose it, plus I've got to dig out the existing foundation which will be a pig from my side only.

Access to neighbours land for building work

Basically I've got a concrete slab in the garden that runs right upto my neighbours border. It used to have a garage there, but the foundations have failed and my neighbour doesn't want me to rebuild it. I need access to his land to remove the current foundations and build new ones - is there...

    Height for light switches

I'm chasing out the house for a sparkie to rewire. I've done the floor sockets at the same height as previously, but there are so many light switch locations I'm changing that I'm going to rechase completely. What height do they typically tend to be (pre the disabled requirement of 1.2m for...

How hard is it to install a door frame in a stud wall?

I've built kitchens and am very handy at DIY. Happy to build a stud wall, but I imagine the door frame could be really hard to get perfect. A couple of mm out at the top and it'll look obvious. Have you DIYers tackled this successfully or am I heading for trouble with this task?

    Build over agreement for sewer

We're going to need one of these from Thames Water for an extension. Just looking for info in advance of getting in touch with Thames Water 1. What do they tend to cost 2. Will we require an accessible manhole cover inside (there isn't the fall to re-route the sewer to the end of the...

Is a radiator needed in a new porch?

It's got one 30cm from the porch in the hallway and the porch is going to be a cavity wall and insulated upto modern BC standards, so I'm unsure if I need to put a new radiator in it? Anyone built a porch without a radiator and got any feedback?
