    Thanks for your observations.I would be better either ripping out the hardboard underlay and tiles attached OR screw some hardboard/plywood over the top and starting again.

    Make sure that you spread tiles for several days not 24 hours as Wickes suggest.Mine(tiles) started swelling after they had been laid and glued to board.
