I hope to convert a loft but there are several unusual vertical members. They run vertically and are nailed to the side of the purlin(at the roof apex)They are approximately the dimension of a skirting board, and I cannot believe they would be load bearing since nthey have a narrow section and are nailes to side of purlin.Ant thoughts?

It is a local authority semi- ,built interwar ie 1919-39,and has gable atone end and a hip roof on the rear.

They sound like "hangers" which are used to stop the ceiling joists from sagging.
But no doubt you'll be installing larger joists anyway won't you? :)

I would probably use some 7" joists.bolted to the existing 5" ceiling joists. Thanks for your comments.

You'll need an SE anyway so let him worry about all this.

I have no wish to be contradictory but why will I require a structural engineer?I have already fitted 7" joists in my own home without trouble-after 15 years

Because you had to ask what these superfluous supports were in the first place?

Also your proposal to bolt new joists to existing joists is normally not recommended

Because the Building Control Officer will require calculations signed off by a Structural Engineer
