hmmmm ok this might have turned into a bigger job than I had intially hoped! I feel a bit of an idiot now as I actually removed the thin plastic tiles which were covering this after taking the carpet up, some of them had been damaged by the removeal of the toilet so I fuigured it would give...

Filling a hole in a cement floor before tiling

Apologies if this should be in a different forum, but I am ultimately going to be tiling this area. I have ripped out our downstairs cloakroom to decorate, tile the floor and put in a new suite. Unfortunately as I was trying to remove the toilet, the screws fixing it to the floor had been...

How to repair a ceiling hole?

Hmmm not easily, just finished decorating upstairs and so I'd rather not lift the flooring up there to get at this if I can possibly avoid it.

Replacing rotary dimmer with touch dimmer wiring question

Ok, well I hope I'm wrong too! Let me check when I get home. So, if I am wrong and there are in fact 3 x three core cables going into the backbox with the following: - all (x3) the blacks chocked together - all (x3) the green/yellows attached to the back box - 2 x red into L1 on the old...

How to repair a ceiling hole?

Hi, I'm trying to replace the ceiling lights in my lounge but on removing the first one I was shocked to find that on removal of the final screw it was still stuck to the ceiling. After a gentle pull I found out why; the light had been plastered to the ceiling and came off with a large chunk...

Replacing rotary dimmer with touch dimmer wiring question

Let me check again when I get home this evening but I'm pretty sure there are only two cores in the green and yellow sleeve attached to the back box (and that they come from the two three cores). However at the ceiling rose end there are three cores coming out so I may be wrong at the switch...

Replacing rotary dimmer with touch dimmer wiring question

Sorry Taylortwocities, you've confused me a bit there. The current set up is two ceiling lights controlled by a single wall dimmer switch (with just one rotary dimmer on). I just want to replace the switch with a new touch one.

Replacing rotary dimmer with touch dimmer wiring question

Hi guys, Thanks for your replies, just to clarify, there is one single dimmer switch controlling two lights. I thought that the two 3 cores I can see coming into the switch would have come from the two lights but I guess that wouldn't make sense as that would leave a single two core...

Replacing rotary dimmer with touch dimmer wiring question

Hi, I am trying to replace an old rotary dimmer with a new touch dimmer but the wiring in the old dimmer doesn't seem to match that suggested on the new instructions. The dimmer is controlling two lights. Into the back box I can see two three-core cables coming in (Red, Black and...

Replacing an antique Open Vent system with a combi?

Hi, All this recent boiler scrappage talk made me start thinking about my draconian Thorn Olympic boiler and open vent system. I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before it give up the ghost completely after more than a handful of close calls. I don't want to start a debate on the...

Attaching stuff to the lighting ring? (Apart from lights)

Hi, I was up in the loft the other day and noticed that the extractor fan in my bathroom is actually connected to the lighting ring. Further investigation shows it going via a fuse outlet unit in the bathroom, is it ok to run this off the lighting ring? This leads to my next question. The...
