Old metal ceiling light with earth, but going nowhere

Hi FrodoOne, It wasn't a soldered connection, it was a terminal with a screw so I added a short piece of wire to bridge to the plastic terminal block. The connector is very small which probably makes it hard to see the screw in the photo, and its the fact that it didn't look big enough to get...

Curious about wood floor expansion in practice

Thanks both, but I understand what would happen to the floor if it expanded and had no gap, it would obviously have to move upwards in places if it can't expand to the sides. Maybe I am not explaining myself well. What I am curious about is what happens to the fixings at on the boards around...

Old metal ceiling light with earth, but going nowhere

Thanks both. I know its probably obvious I should add an earth, but thought it worth checking in case there was some strange reason that it was supposed to be like this. Anyway, earth wire added now and I also double checked to make sure that the earth wire on the plastic junction box is...

Curious about wood floor expansion in practice

Ok, so I know that wood floors, and to a slightly lesser extent, engineered wood floors need to have an expansion gap. I also understand that this is because wood contracts and expands depending on temp/humidity and this is particularly evident across the grain. The expansion gap is sometimes...

Old metal ceiling light with earth, but going nowhere

Hi, Took this old metal ceiling light off while decorating, but noticed that while there is an earth wire terminated to the rose section of the lamp, it wasn't actually connected to anything. The plastic terminal block in the ceiling does have an earth wire in it, but it wasn't connected to the...

Leak at gable end of roof/skews

Thanks. I had to look up parapet gable, I think the roofers around here call them skews. There is no lead on them at the moment, its cement between the slate and the stone. If I understood correctly I think the roofers that were out were proposing covering the entire skew/parapet with lead...

Leak at gable end of roof/skews

Of course. The pic is the cupboard which is in the corner of the room (the corner where the drainpipe is in the outside photo). Water seeping in through the stone above the wooden lintel for the recessed cupboard. No pic of attic as its a nightmare to get into that point again, but it was dry...

Leak at gable end of roof/skews

Hi, Got a bit of a leak coming in at the gable end wall upstairs. There was dampness in an old Edinburgh Press (shallow cupboard set into stone wall) which I thought was condensation and I ripped the wooden lining out to find a leak coming in from above. No dampness or water ingress at all in...

Engineered Wood floor over original floorboards

Apologies for the confusion, I had meant to say flatness not level. I understand the difference and that its flatness that is important here. What I meant to say was that the area I checked already had an issue with flatness, and I need to fix that before I fit a new section of hardboard there...

Engineered Wood floor over original floorboards

Thanks. I have a 6ft level I plan to use once I get the carpet up. One of the places I lifted it already was out of level, but that appears to be because its been lifted before and the board put back down with the original boards loose. Last question. If its all level with the hardboard on...

Engineered Wood floor over original floorboards

Thanks again. I see your point. Just to clear we are talking about the same thing, as I said in my last post I don't think this stuff is called fibreboard. I looked it up online and its called hardboard. In Jewson its called 'standard hardboard' and b and q its 'brown hardboard', both 3mm which...

Engineered Wood floor over original floorboards

Thanks. I don't know if I was clear, but there is already board nailed over the original boards. I referred to it as fibreboard, but that might not be what its called. Its similar to the stuff you usually see pinned on to the back of cheap flatpack furniture. Its about 2-3mm and its been...

Engineered Wood floor over original floorboards

Hi, Hoping someone might have some advice on this. I am planning on doing a floating engineered wood floor in an upstairs in an old (200 years) house. I know that you would normally fit the engineered wood floor over the original floorboards, at an adjacent angle to the existing floorboards...

Sliding door very difficult to open

Thanks diy_fun, its not any easier after leaving it, and I have previously tried silicone spray on all the contact points I can access. When the handle is turned it moves away from the seal on the handle side of the door, but it stays tight on the side that butts against the middle jamb. It...

Sliding door very difficult to open

Hi, I installed these timber construction, triple glazed, sliding doors a couple of years ago, made by a company called Russell Timber. They have always been very difficult to open, but when I called the company after fitting them, they were not very helpful and just said they would ease off...

Shower tray bedding and trap fitting

So is the guy on youtube not in the trade, or are tradespeople not allowed on youtube?

Shower tray bedding and trap fitting

Like I said above This is what the guy in the skillbuilder video referenced above said. Although he recommended against tile adhesive, he said that if you want to use it you should put a plastic sheet between.

Shower tray bedding and trap fitting

In this case the Manufacturer doesn't give any advice on what must be used as a base. I am receiving the tray tomorrow but I have been told that the instructions give no advice about bedding. I think I am probably going to go with the skillbuilder idea of putting a plastic sheet between the...

Using shower tray as a 'batten' for tiling?

Thanks. Good tip. As per the OP, I originally wasn't planning on going all the way to the ceiling, but I have changed that plan now as with the condition of the plaster at the top I would have had to make good on that, and its easier to just fit an extra row of tiles to the ceiling so I have...

Shower tray bedding and trap fitting

So flexible tile adhesive would be ok straight to chipboard? If not I think the skillsbuilder guy on youtube was suggesting putting a plastic sheet between the tray and the tile adhesive, so I suppose the same thing could be done between he chipboard and tray.
