Spoke to my local authority about loft conversion within PD rights, they state you need to submit building notice and full plans and you start work after 6 weeks, is this right?? I though you submit plans and notice and commence work within a few days.

Chaps, I will be upgrading my old CU soon, new regs stipulate amend 3 type units, however outfits like screwfix are also selling non-compliant units as well?? Is it ok to install either or best to go for the latest one? ta

    Combi boiler pressure vessel

You would release some pressure by bleeding your rad, that will bring it down to 1.0 to 1.5 bar. The only other problem could be that if you keep it at 2bar and you operate the boiler, when it reaches 3 bar the prv will kick in and dump water via the copper pipe outside, this will mean a...

How to avoid frozen pipes while away in winter

Difficult to say whats going on. My boiler is in a back building which is subject to low temps in winter. It has a honeywell pipe frost stat (set low) and a room stat (set at 0, should be 5c), over the years i have fine tuned it so it will come on automatically if freeze sets in for 15mins so...

    toilet cistern query

Very unusual. If you have a 6-9l cistern you need to make sure your bowl is also a 6l one and not an old one dating back 20+ years. I have a similar issue and my flushing mechanism will be changed to a fluidmaster unit and the waste bowl fitted with a newer one.

    Boiler warranty

So we hear of boiler warranties, sticking to top 3 Valiant, WB and intergas. The valiant and WB offers 10 years warranties but the integas is only 5 (heat exchnager 10 years) So is it really worth getting the intergas?

    Boilers

New combi boiler time soon. Got it down to: valiant, wb, intergas, Above due to quality and level of guarantee, but there are other makes out there with 7 year warranties like baxi, ideal, even IQE has a 10 year warranty? I know this has been asked but can people shed some light on the above...

ok, so had some chap out to replace the prv and an iso valve He was not very familiar with WB boilers but managed to replace the parts but committed 2 school boy errors: 1) forgot the washer in prv so had to pull it out and redo. 2) did not commission properly (fully discharge air from...

    Help for loft conversion...

I can only see 2 beams, where is beam 1 and 2? I also have plans drawn up, with 2 beams plus a flitch beam, no ridge beam as i will have a partition wall in the loft in the middle. Plus you need more spec like insulation, joist details, fire alarm, etc.

    Planning question

His response: 'There is no uniform spec for lofts. Beam sizes will vary depending on span length and applied loading. It is not right to assume that a beam size in particular loft will be ok for all lofts.' The builder i approached has not even come across a flitch beam in a loft (yes i know...
