    Alarm system wanted

Hi, Could you explain the purpose of connecting the alarm to the router? I'm sorry if this is a silly question but I'm new to this so would appreciate a guide. Thanks

    Kitchen wall advice

Cheers. I was hoping it could be skimmed. I’ll level up as best I can and then get a plasterer to quote. Presumably any hollow parts that are removed can just be bonded and then skimmed without having to bond the whole wall.

    Alarm system wanted

Hi All, I'm replacing the flooring in my 1934 semi-detached property and I thought I could take the opportunity to have an alarm fitted as the flooring being up gives good access for cable runs. Can anyone recommend a decent alarm system? I would like a sensor by the front door and in the...

    Removing pipe in wall

Hi All, I live in a 1934 semi-detached property that used to have gas fires in many rooms. The gas was supplied by steel pipes rather than copper. Many of these pipes ran under the floor and some were buried in the walls. The pipes have now been disconnected at the meter. There is one running...

    Kitchen wall advice

Hi All, I've ripped out our old kitchen as part of dealing with some flooring issues. We're approaching the end of the flooring work and my attention is now turning to how best to rectify the walls. The missus wants the walls painted and kitchen units with quartz work tops. This all requires...

    T&G Chipboard Questions

Hi All, I'm laying some 22mm T&G chipboard in the ground floor of my 1934 semi-detached property. This has been prompted by the need to remove the existing floor (which was vinyl, glued to the floorboards) to deal with issues affecting various services. I've never done this before so am...

Rotten joist and wall plate replacement

Hi, I'm in the process of replacing my ground floor floorboards with 22mm t&g chipboard. This is as a result of having to rip the previous floor up to remedy issues with various services. During the process I've discovered evidence of an historic damp issue which has left a joist end, and the...

    Perimeter wall wallplate loose

I had just removed the rad that the pipe was connected to. Water was spilt in the process. Anyone able to comment on securing the wallplate?

    Perimeter wall wallplate loose

Hi Another issue I've encountered during renovation of my suspended timber floor. The wallplate on the perimeter wall that the joists rest on is loose. Not completely but when bouncing up and down I can see that the joists are attached to the wallplate and it is the wallplate that is moving...

What's the deal with vapour barrier membranes?

I'm new to this. Which one should be fitted when insulating between the joists of a suspended timber floor? So the membrane (vapour or breathable?) reduces the likelihood of this occurring? Clarification of these points would be appreciated. Thanks

What's the deal with vapour barrier membranes?

When I said polythene I meant basically a plastic sheet like a DPM rather than something which purports to allow vapour to pass in one direction but not allow liquid to pass. I take it you're of the opinion that one should be fitted when insulating a suspended timber floor? Is there a...

What's the deal with vapour barrier membranes?

This is what I'm trying to clarify. The prices seem to vary and I'm wondering if there a specification that is causing the different prices? Then there are the people who say they don't fit one. All very confusing for a DIYer.

What's the deal with vapour barrier membranes?

Some people swear by them. Others just use polythene sheeting. They seem to vary massively in price. I'm insulating my suspended timber floor and various websites recommend I fit one between the insulation and the flooring. Interested in peoples' experience. Is it just about complying with...

    Sand on my oversite

Clearing the sand has allowed me to see that damp is tracking across to the oversite when it rained last night. I suspect that the external ground level is too high. Only a single course below the dpc visible. We've not been here long but I intend to remove the decking and the slabs. Remove...

    Sand on my oversite

Just wondering if there is a good reason for all the sand on my oversite? While I've got the floor up I'm giving it a clean.

    Driveway Installer Not Laying Membrane

I laid a garden path myself in mid Jan. My soil is heavy clay. I didn't use a membrane but a lot of the hardcore sunk into the clay. Perhaps a membrane would have reduced the amount of hardcore used…?

Damage to hearth when removing flooring

Hi I'm removing the flooring in my kitchen to replace with chipboard. The property is a 1934 semi-detached. The flooring was vinyl tiles glued to thin ply glued to the floor boards. A gas leak meant it had to come up. I'm now cutting the remainder out. When I removed the vinyl over the hearth...

Minimum backbox depth for cat 6 data module?

Hi I’ve had some electrical work done. I asked the spark to run some cat 6 cable for me (while he was running electrical cables) and just leave the cat6 cables to be terminated later. I’m now looking to purchase faceplate and modules to have these cables terminated. Just seen in the specs...
