screwing down plywood over chimney hearth

I'm currently screwing in my 12mm plywood into the floorboards. There is one area by the chimney breast where the hearth probably used to be 100 years ago. It's concrete so I can't screw into it. Do I just secure screws around it into the wood? It'll leave a rectangular area where there aren't...

    screw length - plywood

need to screw some plywood down before tiling on it. I took up the old vinyl and chipboard and it looks like my floorboards are 22mm thick. My ply is 12mm. Any recommended screw length? Would 30mm be alright? I think gcol mentioned brass screws are weak, so what's best?

tiling - screw down plywood to floorboards

Alright then! :D Do I need to use batons running parallel to the walls? Everything I've seen says to place the centre tile and work it out so that you are left with a half tile against the wall. Surely, once you've done this, if you start from the corner of the room there will be a slight...

tiling - screw down plywood to floorboards

Right, in the DIY book I have it says to use 9mm plywood. Thinking about it, I'm a bit worried that 12mm will be too thick as when you add that plus the thickness of tiles + adhesive, they may come above the level of the carpet in the hallway just before you get into the kitchen. Will 9mm do...

tiling - screw down plywood to floorboards

Need about 13m2 and the local builders suggested I needed 5 sheets at a total of £110. Sound about right? B&Q do sheets (can't remember exact size), but they're about £20.

tiling - screw down plywood to floorboards

Turns out the main room doesn't have plywood down...it is some sort of thin chipboard type stuff so I'm going to have to take that up and put 12mm plywood down. DOes it matter if I put the plywood down in smaller sections rather than 1 big piece? I assume I screw this down all over. Is...

    remove skirting board - tiling?

Do you grout on the skirting board side then? Even a slight dodgy cut on the tile will leave a gap and there'll be grout between the tile and skirting. Just asking cos I did this on my wall tiles and you're supposed to take off socket covers and tile up to the metal case then put the cover...

utility room tiling - flexible adhesive?

No, that's fine - I'll use BAL but was just wondering why. Is it because the floorboards can move over time ? Also if a 20kg bag covers 4m2 how much flex grout should I get? ...just a 10kg bag?

    remove skirting board - tiling?

One more thing ;) Should I remove the current skirting board and tile right up to the wall, grout, then replace the skirting board (attach with no more nails or something like that) ? The other option is to leave it where it is and tile up to the skirting board but I imagine it won't look...
