    Joists rest on it, I checked under the floorboards and seems to be only supporting the joists Im not trying to get away not using a beam, but if the beams huge then i'll have to think of other plans. Dont want to invest in calcs + Building engineer if its unfeasable!

    How flat does a ceiling have to be?

    maybe frowned upon, but i generally leave the lathes in place and just remove the plaster, then i use 9mm handiboard - it's in my opinion easier to work with when the ceiling is uneven and your working on your own. I had a similar ceiling in my house it was a nightmare - .5" difference in places

    drill hole, fill with liquid nails or similar and insert plug, if its half inch gap then maybe drill to brick and using a piping bag / icing bag to fill hole / gap with plaster / board adhesive - then re drill hole ?
