Nervous about boxing in joints - advice please.

Good morning all, I have refit my bathroom but have ended up with a compression joint in a really tricky position. Should it fail in the future there is no real chance of getting tool access. Is there anything I can do to limit the risk of this failing? Is it worth breaking the joint to...

    Bottle Trap extension length question.

Thanks Charnwood, The bottle trap I am looking at comes with a 330mm one, so I should be sorted to cut that back. gw

    Bottle Trap extension length question.

An easy one for you  I am installing a wall hung basin, and am looking for a chrome bottle trap. The distance of the plug-hole to the wall is 225mm, but it is proving difficult to find a trap with an extension of this length. So my question is; Can you simply cut a bottle trap...

Dot & Dab depth (say that quickly...)

Everyday is a school day!!! Yep, 1890's. The reason I assumed it is cavity is because I poked a stick through the vent and found I could feed it downwards by ~12-18" before I hit the external wall. Maybe this is normal for vent installations in solid walls. It is a converted flat, so no...

Dot & Dab depth (say that quickly...)

Hi Richard, External cavity wall (red-brick, 1890's, ~62cm thick). Here is the vent: I am very grateful for your advice :) gw

Dot & Dab depth (say that quickly...)

Superb, thanks gents. Richard C, you make an interesting point about damp issues behind boards. The wall I need to board is an external wall and has an airbrick/grill - should this be blocked before boarding over it? Or should I add a grill to the new boards? :?: I will use Aquapanel.

How to wall hang a basin with no mounting holes...

Sorry, which would be too flimsy? The Armitage Portman or the "L" brackets? I am struggling finding anyother central support brackets - those I can find seem basin specific and are not provided with dimensions...If you can find a link to the ones you were referring to I would be very...

How to wall hang a basin with no mounting holes...

Thanks picasso, The problem with L brackets is that the basin only has a thin 'skirt' on which to sit on the brackets - ~14mm. Would this be wide enough to safely mastic? I have found the following: http://www.bathrooms-store.co.uk/category/46-wastes-fittings.aspx Can mastic (silicon...

How to wall hang a basin with no mounting holes...

Morning, I have a bauhaus elite 50 basin (can't get the to upload) which I intended to wall mount using the appropriate vanity unit. The vanity unit is now no longer wanted so I need to find a way of hanging a basin which does not have the usual holes on the rear face for bolts. Any idea...

Dot & Dab depth (say that quickly...)

Thanks all. Dumb question time: How do you get the batons flat/plumb if the wall you are screwing to is off? Do you use different thicknesses of shims? It seems like a fiddly job. As I need to make this wall line up with a boxed-in window recess, d&d sounds like the best route still - unless...

Dot & Dab depth (say that quickly...)

Evening, What is the maximum depth you can D&D? I need to build an uneven wall out ~50mm; is this possible? I will be using moisture resistant board and tiling (bathroom). Many thanks in advance. GW

    Skimming Aquapanel - Big mistake....?

Superb, thanks PBD, I think I will look to get it done using the recommended products; if I can find the stuff. They may as well have specified applying a layer of rocking-horse sh1t using a unicorns horn. Given the lack of first-hand experience on skimming AP, I will make sure I get back...

    Skimming Aquapanel - Big mistake....?

Screwed to studs at ~14" centres. It sounds like skimming it could be a risk and stripping/over-boarding is a pain. That said, replacing it may be cheaper in the long run...plus I can use the panels as templates to cut the new board. For information what is "SBR slurry" and "bond-it" :?:

    Skimming Aquapanel - Big mistake....?

Thank you. Reading the link, it states that Q4 can be used on ceilings, but only as a finish - first it needs a coat of "Aquapanel Joint Filler and Skim Coating with Aquapanel Reinforicng Mesh". Am I right in assuming that a good plasterer will be familiar with this method and capable of...

    Skimming Aquapanel - Big mistake....?

Hi All, I have installed Aquapanel on walls an ceiling of our small bathroom, believing this to be the most 'belt and braces' option. I have now understood that plastering it is not advised, unless using specific Knauf products (skim with a mesh). Can you please offer some guidance...

Replacing L&P - but laths pass behind the wall....

Thanks for the inputs. alastairreid and roy c - The uprights are 14" centres, with the centre of the final upright ~7" from the corner. Having just poked the tape measure inside the cavity to find the next upright, it appears I may be lucky - The next upright is right in the corner of the...

Replacing L&P - but laths pass behind the wall....

I am replacing a Lath & Plaster wall with PB. I have stripped off the plaster to find that the laths in the corner of the room pass through to the next room. If I cut/remove these laths I imagine the plaster in the next room will be wrecked. Other than going back in time and not starting...

McAlpine WC Connector with Vent Boss - OK for basin waste?

How about experience with the WC-CON1V? http://www.mcalpineplumbing.com/productlist.asp Sadly the Multikwik one is not suitable as I also need to attach a flexible wc connector to go to the pan spigot.

Soil Pipe Cutter - How short can?should I cut?

Although "skelping" it sounds fun, I am a coward  What is the difference between "snap cutters" and "chain cutters"? Some sites use them interchangeably, others say they are different.... :?: How wide is the chain on a snap/chain cutter? Will it (and the ratchett) fit in the 2.5"...
