Unvented HW Cylinder: what are the essentials?

I think it's for hot water only- but it's a very good question! And one I will check as it hadn't -ahem- occurred to me! As for MRI scanners, I entirely agree with you. They're designed, as are CT scanners to run 24 hours a day. We run ours 7.30am to 8pm (plus emergencies) which still leaves...

Garden gate key lock, acessible both sides. Suggestions?

Thermo, do you have to provide any weather protection or do you accept that it will rust in time? Can you improve its life span by squirting oil into its innards?

Unvented HW Cylinder: what are the essentials?

No, actually, I will go further. As I made clear in my post, I know nothing about plumbing, let alone unvented cylinders. I have asked many, many questions. I have received many, many answers; many, many of which directly contradict what I've already been told, which is why I came on here...

Creaky floors upstairs in 10 yr old estate house. Fix?!

I haven't pulled up the carpet but I'd expect to find 'chipboard' under them not fine antique oak planks! One area in particular makes a hell of a din above the lounge as someone walks across that bedroom floor above. Is it likely to be the chipboard creaking against the -is it- joists...

Garden gate key lock, acessible both sides. Suggestions?

We have a 6' fence and a matching garden gate. The lock on it is knackered, and I want to replace it preferably with a proper 'door' lock with the ability to unlock it from either side (eg our kids accessing back-garden shed with bikes, from the driveway). There is no depth to recess a lock...

Suggest a silver birch variety for my back garden pls!

Garden is 10m x 5m, SE facing. I want to put 2 elegant silver birth 'together' along the back fence to a) create a feature and b) screen the neighbours a bit. I am looking for a 3-4m tree with a narrow, upright habit, with proper 'white' bark- or at least, attractive bark! Any...

Unvented HW Cylinder: what are the essentials?

Thanks, all. Thankfully the one thing we DO have is very adequate mains pressure! What does 'balanced' mean in relation to a 22mm cold main feed? One plumber did tell us we needed to look at getting the 'sytem balanced' so that we had equal pressure on the hot and the cold side. Wot...

Unvented HW Cylinder: what are the essentials?

I am looking to put in an indirect HW cylinder in the loft. We have had a couple of quotes and we realise we haven't a clue about what is essential to the installation and what isn't. Quotes have ranged from £1800 to £3000. Does the plumber have to have an unvented licence? Am I right in...

Rotten base of 6' fence post. What to do?

Go on! Tell! Or does it involve supernatural powers??!

Rotten base of 6' fence post. What to do?

Hang on! Just worked it out! Duh.

Rotten base of 6' fence post. What to do?

Many thanks- But how do you use the arris rail bracket? Or do you need to buy a fence post with the relevant mortices precut? (I am assuming you stick the spike part of the metal bracket into a mortice!) Or am I being a complete numpty?

Rotten base of 6' fence post. What to do?

This lapped (I think that's the right word!) wooden fence is in good enough condition but one of the posts is in the process of rotting off where it meets the ground. The rest of the post is good, but the post can be swayed a good 6" each way pivoting at ground level! Whilst the obvious...

Can I pave over a concrete slab successfully?

We have a 2.5m x 2.5m area of concrete in the corner of the garden (base for a deceased wendy house). It's in good condition, and I have no idea how thick it is thus breaking it up would be far too big a hassle. Can I turn it into a less unslightly patio area by paving over it with say 450mm...

How hard is it to chip out a feature/border tile strip?

It's made up of 50mm wide, 250mm long tiles which are sort of 3D- they have a rope effect design sitting proud of them. About half form the top of a half wall height of tiles as a border with a painted hollow wall above, the others are embedded as part of a shower wall feature effect. The rest...

Unvented cylinder+separate football shape expansion. Which?

Surely a megaflow traditionally has an INTERNAL expansion bubble? As do many of the other brands? I am aware you can fit an external expansion chamber to such systems (and thus increase your cylinder capacity) but the system we were told about (but no brand name given) is apparently designed to...

Unvented cylinder+separate football shape expansion. Which?

What brand might this be? It was described to us as being the above with the expansion chamber being a separate unit, football size and shape that sits near the cylinder but isn't part of it. Apparently it makes servicing and restoring the air bubble much easier. Thanks!

    Water softeners...Guidance needed

OK, bit the bullet and ordered a Kinetico 2020c, plus in line mains drinking water filtration tap in the kitchen. £1500 ish all up including installation.

Mains cylinder + expansion chamber. Good idea?

My plumber reckons the external expansion tank system he's recommending takes 18-20 mins to replenish!..... to be fair, I can live with that IF it doesn't mean having to get a bloke out to replenish the air bubble every 6 months or so with sufficient useage. I'm still not sure!

Mains cylinder + expansion chamber. Good idea?

ie Not a Megaflo. A plumber assures me that having a separate 'football shaped' expansion chamber near the cylinder is a better idea than an integral air bubble as you can service that far more easily. He reckons a Megaflo COULD need re-air bubbling every 5 months or so! What do you think?
