I haven't pulled up the carpet but I'd expect to find 'chipboard' under them not fine antique oak planks!

One area in particular makes a hell of a din above the lounge as someone walks across that bedroom floor above.

Is it likely to be the chipboard creaking against the -is it- joists beneath?

If so is it likely the board were just nailed on and now after 10 years the nails are working loose?

And is the solution screws? Or do we have to lift the boards and put 'something' between the board and the joists before screwing it all back down?

Your thoughts please!

The nails "Should " be Ring Shank  . I had to do a whole room @ my last house  I got the -ordinary wire nails -out and put big screws in their place - otherwise you need to check if there are any pipes etc. under if you start screwing elsewhere
