    Possible radiator pipe oxidisation

Hoping for some advice about something I just noticed on a few of our radiators. Some of the pipes have what appears to be oxidisation (I'm guessing based on the turquoise colour) although there are no obvious leaks. The turquoise residue flakes off when touched but can't be totally cleaned...

Weather proof bathroom vent on roof - cowl fitting?

Thanks for the advice. I think the mushroom vent cowl looks like a good option. I might replace that other one to be on the safe side. Are these easy enough to fit or should I get a roofer in? Want to make sure they stay in place with the wind.

Weather proof bathroom vent on roof - cowl fitting?

It might be a daft question but how do these mushroom cowls allow steam from an extractor fan to escape? Its not obvious from the pictures or descriptions.

Weather proof bathroom vent on roof - cowl fitting?

Something like this one? This new attached picture is from another part of the house, although I don't actually know what it's for. Or should I replace this one as well? Is there any specific suppliers or brands that are better to use? I had a look at B&Q website before but I couldn't see...

Weather proof bathroom vent on roof - cowl fitting?

I've had a constant build up of water in our extractor fan ducting in the loft. This has been made worse by a tear in the ducting causing a leak to spread. There doesn't appear to be water dripping inside the loft from the outer edge of the pipe so I think the seal is secure holding the pipe in...

    Monoblock gap sand/filller

I have just power washed our large monoblock driveway front and back removing all the sand and weeds etc. It's looking really good but I've now got a dilemma about how/when to fill the gaps between the bricks. Is it best to wait 6 -7 months (around next March/April time) before filling it when...

Philips hue bulbs in recessed downlight fittungs

You don't have to keep the main light switch on all the time, which we won't anyway. Reason for going down this route is to allow us to have greater flexibility of using the lights which will improve their versatility and probably reduce overall running costs. We can switch between cool white...

Philips hue bulbs in recessed downlight fittungs

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for everyone's input. Finally got round to buying some of the hue bulbs to try out (e27 ambience bulbs). I'm hoping it should be ok with fitting these bulbs in the fittings shown in the attached photos? The bulbs will still have a few mm gap to allow heat to...

Philips hue bulbs in recessed downlight fittungs

Hello I was looking to fit philips hue ambience white E27 bulbs to my existing E27 kitchen down light fittings which are recessed. There are 10 in total. However the standard advice from philips seems to be that these bulbs should not be used in "closed" fixtures. The problem is that they...

Robus T4 Linkable electronic striplights 8W not working

I moved into a new house last year which had 6 of these lamps (Robus T4 Linkable electronic striplights 8W) fitted in the kitchen connected by 1 switch. 1 by 1 the lamps/bulbs stopped working over a period of a 2-3 months (after 10 months of working fine). Is it normal for these to fail at...

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

One thing that puzzled both me and the electrician was the very unhelpful design of the humidstat fan (airvent),which turns out to be quite common apparently. It has a pullcord if you want to change between 'continous on' or 'humidity activated on', but no way of telling which one it is on...

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

Thanks for the advice, really helpful. It actually proved worthwhile asking these questions as the electrician was really understanding and I got the bathroom fan changed for a more suitable one - one that was suggested on this forum. It was easy enough for him to replace and better suited our...

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

Had a look on screwfix at bathroom extractor fans and for the spec I'm looking for 100mm with a timer. There's only 1 that fits the bill and its £68, vent-axia http://www.screwfix.com/p/vent-axia-va100xt-20w-axial-bathroom-fan/99080?_requestid=65835 Is it worth paying an extra £68 on top to get...

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

I could ask him to fit a better quality extractor and pay the extra. Is it straightforward enough to replace extractor fan units without too much effort? How much should I pay for a decent performing extractor fan? Any brand/model recommendations?

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

Is that a comment about bathroom fans in general or specific to the airvent fan that was fitted? Surely they must be doing something to reduce condensation levels otherwise what is the point of them?

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

Is that really a valid comparison for an RCD unit and smoke/heat alarms? Performance and style of a car is a big part of the price, i.e. how it gets you from A to B and how it looks. Gets you there possibly quicker, smoother drive, maybe more fuel efficiently and arguably in more style. With...

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

Is it just the extractor fans you are referring to as being "cheap products" or also the RCD unit and smoke/heat detectors? I'm guessing that it's not so much of an issue for the RCD unit and smoke/heat detectors as performance isn't as much of an issue for them, in the sense that they need to...

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

He's charging me £1,350 for all the work and materials: - 2 extractor fans fitted (with 1 hole cored in bathroom) - 2 smoke detectors and 1 heat detector (BRK brand) - New RCD unit (CPN/ CUDIS) - Rewire of lights, cooker & water heater (see previous details above) - EICR - PAT tests Am I being...

Fair price for a partial rewire of a 1 bed flat

Went round to check out the work tonight. He's used airvent extractor fans in the bathroom and kitchen. I tested the bathroom 1 out by putting the shower on and closing the window. The fan didn't seem to make that much difference to condensation levels. Also the kitchen 1 is meant to be...
