Tap glands - type of grease to use?

To save a few quid I'm replacing the O-Rings and washers in some tap glands, like this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-1-2-bsp-full-turn-brass-threaded-tap-glands-pack/3279f What kind of grease should I use to lubricate the internal threads, etc? I think I have lying around some white...

Washing machine - what's making this noise?

Took the top off, checked the counterweight bolts and all seemed okay (but I managed to nip them all up a little more). Didn't remove the front but put my arm inside and the lower counterweight feels okay (no obvious looseness, hard to be sure though because of course some undetectable looseness...

Washing machine - what's making this noise?

I also enjoy fixing things but in the case of anything relatively complex I prefer to have a technical/service manual on hand just in case I get stuck. Depending on my mood I can be impatient and get frustrated easily, plus I have intermittent back problems which makes life more difficult...

Washing machine - what's making this noise?

Thank you kindly. Edit: had a quick skim through it, looks like a real pain to remove the drum. However, if it's just a loose counterweight then that won't of course be necessary. As an aside, that looks like an interesting channel (I love repair videos) so it's also given me something else to...

Washing machine - what's making this noise?

How do I remove the metal cover to check the counterweights? It seems like I need to remove the top and also the front panel, but it's not immediately obvious how to remove the latter. I can't seem to find any kind of service manual or suitable details online.

Washing machine - what's making this noise?

Just re-tried a manual spin - seems to be okay, sounds the same as it always has, no excess noise. So I guess I'll need to pull it out, remove the casing and take a look at the weights?

Washing machine - what's making this noise?

Thanks for the advice. I've just tried spinning the empty drum by hand but can't hear anything. Short of opening up the machine is there any way to tell if my particular unit has replaceable bearings? Maybe some kind of serial number lookup, manufacturing date, etc? Or could I tell just by...

Washing machine - what's making this noise?

My Hotpoint WML540 has recently started making an unusual rhythmic noise when on spin (and only on spin - not the normal wash rotation of the drum). Thought I'd try and record it to get some opinions, I've placed the .mp3 file into a .zip file (WML540 - audio.zip) and that can be seen in this...

Washing Machines - which makes are generally thought of as the best these days?

I'd rather not pay much over £500, but I may be able to go a little higher in exceptional circumstances. Shame about Bosch as, going by early comments, they were looking good until now. About AEG - how old is yours? So the build quality is good, how about customer service? Also, where are...

Thanks to you all for the advice, sounds like Bosch is the way to go.

Washing Machines - which makes are generally thought of as the best these days?

My washing machine (Hotpoint WML540) is starting to sound pretty rough when on the spin cycle (and only on that cycle) and I guess the bearings are on the way out. From doing some reading it seems that the drum is glued shut so pretty it's impossible to replace the bearings. So, I may need a...

Old chimney lead flashing - what to do with it?

I recently had a chimney removed and opted to keep the old lead flashing (I'm beginning to wonder why) - it was a large chimney so there's a fair amount of it. What are my best options? Could I get any money for it? Was thinking of getting it picked up for free by a local scrap dealer. Any...

Chimney removal - does the flue need to be vented top and bottom?

I'm soon planning to remove a brick chimney that is connected to an unused fireplace in my bungalow. Once the chimney stack has been reduced to the roof line do I need to install something like a vent tile where it was removed so that the flue has some airflow? Or can it just be left 'open'...

Concrete Bonding Agent (SBR+) - disposal of watered down solution?

Had to mix up some SBR+ bonding agent (diluted with water, 3 to 1). Unsure what to do with what's left (about a litre of the mix). I know it's not supposed to be tipped down drains but if I water it down even further can I dump it in an unused corner of the garden where nothing is growing (and...
