packing out lintel in chimney breast

Thanks for the article. The work was done under the supervision of our builder but he's gone off to do another job and his advice was to use slate to fill in the gap (which he was going to give us). No worries- we have a proper concrete lintel in there- and to be honest, we didn't think it...

Fixing constructional hearth/ fitting a granite one

(On the boyfriend's insistance) We are fitting a solid fuel burning fire into our house in the second fireplace. My boyfriend intends to fit it himself but I am going to get a HETAS installer in to do the job (or at least finish it off) and make sure that it's safe and we don't die. However, I...

packing out lintel in chimney breast

Thanks for the advice. Would that be easy to do? The boyf will say he'll have a go but I'm pretty sure he's never mixed mortar and his attempts at stuff arn't always that successful. Also, we only need a little bit really (don't sand, concrete etc come in rather large bags?) For those...

packing out lintel in chimney breast

The lintel has only been slotted in not fixed in yet. Where it rests on the bricks its quite snug and could easily be pointed. Over the opening, some bricks have fallen out (or been knocked out by the boyf) so the gap goes from about 3cm to about 8cm. Any ideas?

packing out lintel in chimney breast

I (or rather my boyfriend has) knocked through a whole in the chimney breast and put in a lintel. We plan to board it out and plaster to create a decorative opening. We have a gap between the lintel and the brick in the chimney. We were told by someone we should fill the gap with slate. I'm...

electrics need updating-need an electrician in/near Coventry

I'm having an extension built and I know that the wiring in the main house needs to updated first. Is there anyone nearby who's fully registered that can have a look at it/ do the job? Norah.

    Plasterboard above bay window

I want to fit a curtain pole in my bay window. It's a bendy one to fit in, the trouble is when I looked at the curtain track that is currently up; it appears there is nothing but plasterboard or something like it above the window. The curtain track is fixed to wooden blocks that are inserted...

    Roof for new extension?

Thanks for your advice. I spoke with the builder and we agreed that we'd stick with the tiled roof. I'm going to try and save money in other areas :)

back bolier packed up- which combi/where?

The Valiant boiler was mentioned by the heating engineer I'd decided to use anyway so quite pleased- he's corgi reg. and highly recommended so that should be fine. Those were my concerns about the loft- all work I plan to have done eventually but can't really at the moment. The immersion...

back bolier packed up- which combi/where?

I don't want advice on the back boiler- that's going anyway. I would like advise on which boiler makes people would recommend since I don't know anything about the boilers different heating engineers have mentioned. I was wondering on an alternative location not a temporary one- since I...

    Roof for new extension?

Hi I'm posting a lot of questions and apologise to anyone who's getting sick of hearing from me but I'm a first time buyer- property 'in need of modernisation' (ie. a wreck!)- with a very tight budget and I'm finding this site such an amazing resource. I am having an extension built onto...

back bolier packed up- which combi/where?

I moved into a 1930s house in January and the the bolier packed up after about 6 weeks. It is a back boiler in the downstairs back room and very old. I planned to change it anyway but first it stopped heating the water and then pipes started making strange loud noises so I've stopped using it...

Removed cemented tiles in bathroom- help!

The tiles already protude out a lot from the wall because there's at least 4mm of cement underneath, on top of the plaster. I'm having an extension built on to the kitchen so I think I need to take it all off so all the walls can be plastered. I'm trying to do as much work as I can to save...

Removed cemented tiles in bathroom- help!

I've just removed the tiles in my bathroom- they were the original 1930s tiles and cemented on. I also have the same in my kitchen which I plan to remove later this weekend. My problem is I am now looking at bare brick on the bottom half of the wall. Do I need to take the rest of the wall...

    New kitchen extension concrete floor

I have a very tiny kitchen in a 1930s end of terrace and I'm planning to have an extension built on to lengthen it and then build out widthways too, to extend the main house. Under the lino in the kitchen is the original tiled floor- same as in the hallway. My builder says this has to come up...
