    Puzzling plumbing problem

Yes it is a mixer tap. We have tried adjusting the cold pressure down (and even off) with the valves fitted under the sink but it made no difference. I should say we also fitted a non-return valve on the hot water pipe, also under the sink.

    Puzzling plumbing problem

I would welcome any views on a problem we have made for ourselves in building a new kitchen. I will say upfront that our knowledge of plumbing really only extends to being able to join pipes, taps etc together and (clearly) not in understanding how the whole system works. The kitchen takes...

    Lighting circuit

I will be getting much of my house rewired over next 18 months, however in the short term I want to add a couple of fluorescent lights into an attic space. A lighting circuit already runs through the attic so I thought this could be extended. On further investigation it turns out that too many...

    Soil Pipe Bung

Does anyone know whether it's possible to get a water tight bung for a soil pipe? Having just removed an old outside toilet I want to continue to use the wash basin which has a waste pipe running into the soil pipe. Obviously without being able to make the end of the soil pipe water tight...

LV Downlight cover/not cover with loft Insulation

Hi, I am interested in this thread also. Can the covers mentioned be used for mains voltage downlighters - presumably it makes no difference as long as there is enough airflow? Does the place mentioned have a website? Can the covers be bought anywhere else such as normal DIY store? Are there...

    Security Lighting

thanks breezer - I'll think about having 2 / 2 btw I agree with your pet hate - I have just taken out a 500W floodlight that the previous owner put up which shone directly into the neighbours kitchen!

    Security Lighting

Because of the peculiar way my house is set out I want to be able to trigger 3 or 4 bulkhead lights (relatively low wattage) from 2 different PIR's, one at the top of some steps and one around a corner. I want all lights to come on whether the top or bottom sensor is triggered. I assume I...

    Supplementary Bonding Questions

Advise sought please. Following advise from Breezer last week went to my local electrical shop to buy some earth cable and clamps to cross bond items in my new kitchen. The man in the shop said that the new regulations required all metallic objects (electrical and non-electrical to be cross...

    Dodgy junction box comments

Following on from recent posts I would like comments about the best thing to do with a junction box. I have been putting in a new light and found that all lights and switches for one particular lighting curcuit were run out of a humungous junction box with a 12 way 5 Amp terminal block. Each...

mysterious light switch wrong way round problem

thanks again breezer. I assume you mean that I should connect to L1 not L2 as it's already connected to L2. I had literally just come to the same conclusion after reading some related material in a book. OK one final question that's been bothering me all night. I had to take the top off an...

mysterious light switch wrong way round problem

I've got a feeling you are all going to get bored of answering my questions as every time I solve one puzzle a new one appears. I am converting what was a normal room into a kitchen and am currently sorting out the lights. There were sets of lights operated by 2 switches. I have replaced the...

    Electric Cabling and cavity walls

Thanks breezer Pity I didn't know that before I put the cupboards on the wall where my route back to the consumer unit is! You live and learn I've had some more fun and games today so I'm going to start a new thread, if your'e reading I'd welcome your ideas Ian

    Electric Cabling and cavity walls

thanks for that. Just to confirm I bond all the sink and all pipes to the cold water pipe, which further back has an earth connection to the consumer unit. Is that correct?

    Electric Cabling and cavity walls

I know the topic has wandered from the original and I hope it's OK in this forum. Having read the article breezer pointed me at it (and other articles) the discussion is always about bathrooms. Are there not similar dangers in kitchens. My project is wiring a new kitchen so do I need to add...

    Electric Cabling and cavity walls

Thanks guys. No I am definately not a qualified electrician - I am pretty green at all this. I am trying to do the best job I can so I wan't to understand where the dangers are. The trouble is, as with everything in life, experience then shows where you have made mistakes! Actually the...
