    Chimney breast air vent...

Another question relating to this. On the chimney breast that I have to put a vent on I also want to put a radiator. Will I be OK with the radiator being fitted in front of the vent? Aside from heat leaking out and up the chimney breast when that rad is on will it pose any other issues?

    Chimney breast air vent...

Ok thanks for the help guys. I may change the ones in the bedroom too as they look to be about 30cm x 30cm so i'd prefer some that are a bit smaller -the small ones that are around the 230mm x 75mm mark may do the trick. In the lounge we are eventually going to fit a log burner so would...

    Chimney breast air vent...

So I should definitely look at installing a vent of some kind on the ground floor breast that we're blocking up. There is also currently quite large vents on the chimney breasts in the bedrooms, do they need to stay? Also, what do you mean by internal or external? My house is a 1930's semi...

    Chimney breast air vent...

Hi all, currently got 2 chimney breasts in my house. One of them I want to block up, board over and fit a radiator too and the other i've opened up more in the hope of fitting a log burner in the near future. I'm just wondering if I need to fit an air vent of some kind into the chimney breast...

Can you have one RSJ rest on another?

Ah right, so my builder will be au fais with this kind of thing and I won't be asking him to do anything out of the ordinary?

Can you have one RSJ rest on another?

Just looking at some building work in my house and wondering about taking out two walls to open up the back of the house. House is a 1930's 3 bed semi. One wall runs nearly the entire length of the back of the house and currently has a smallish extension in it, the other wall is the wall...

    Raising roof of extension.....

Bit more than I was expecting really, was expecting it to be more around the 2k area! Eeeekkkk, need to rethink how we tackle this work!

    Raising roof of extension.....

Hi all, looking at buying a new house and across the back there is an odd sized extension of about 3m x 0.7m and a bit which is a bit wider of about 1.8m x 2m. One part extends the dining room and the slightly wider part is an outbuilding on the back of our kitchen. We're thinking about...

    Removing chimney breasts...

Hmmm pretty sure when my dad removed his about 4 or 5 years ago he didn't. Do you need to fit anything in the ceiling in place of the chimney breast once its been removed? If you're taking it out of the upstairs bedroom and dining room would it just need to be supported in the loft?

    Removing chimney breasts...

Would I need to get building regs approval to knock out our chimney breast from the dining room and also take out the corresponding one from the back bedroom upstairs too? Is there anything I need to be aware of when doing something like this?

    Is this a massive job?

Thanks for your advice oldbutnotdead. Lots to think about in terms of taking the walls down and the job as a whole. Hopefully bringing the outbuilding up to current regs wont be too much of a problem. Once I've got in i'll do some digging about and figure out what is actually in there and...

    Is this a massive job?

Thanks for the above info on the lintels, deffo something for me to think about and probably a better route to go down rather than getting RSJ's in. I'm not too fussed if it has to be boxed and is visible, it was just confusing me how the house down the road doesn't appear to have anything...

    Is this a massive job?

The outbuilding at the end of the kitchen and the slim extension at the end of the dining room are single story, they support a small slate roof. There is an upstairs above the kitchen/dining room/lounge. Interesting point about the lintels, any reason to go for lintels over RSJs? - i've...

    Is this a massive job?

Hi. Yep I thought I was being a bit optimistic asking for a rough guide on price. Just want to know if its a mega job though really. I was under the impression that if you're removing a load bearing wall its best to get a SE to calculate for the steel required that will be replacing the...

    Is this a massive job?

Hi all, I am in the process of buying a house. It currently has a narrow galley kitchen which is c. 2.6m x 1.7m, I would like to remove one of the walls to open it up to the dining room. As well as this, there is an a small, single skin outbuilding of c. 1.5m x 1.5m attached onto the end of...
