    Fire doors and loft conversion

Also looking at fire doors. Reasonable looking 1930's style ones can be had for £80. With the furniture I might be able to get the lot for just over a grand. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

    Fire doors and loft conversion

That's the bummer. Although there is the regs, there are many ways to skin a cat. Just depends how creative the BCO is willing to be. I have however found this LABC document that seems to suggest interlinked smoke alarms in each room can be sufficient. Might email it to him.

    Fire doors and loft conversion

I'm back revisiting this now as it's no longer pie in the sky stuff as I'll need to sort before Christmas when I anticipate to be almost done. I'll state first off that I'm not looking to compromise fire safety and wish to comply with regs, if in a roundabout way to the same effect - of...

    Loft conversion floor insulation?

Cheers for that. That's what confused me. Fire regs are met with no insulation so by adding some mineral they maybe aren't.... But your logic that overboarding the lath and plaster screwed into joists seems far more appropriate.

    Loft conversion floor insulation?

Just had my first building inspection on the structure. Inspector said it was a good job! Next is insulation. Going 100mm celotex between rafters and 50mm over the top. Bloody expensive..... Although not a requirement (I believe), Im considering insulating between the floor joists for 2...

New floor joists 5mm height difference

Yes. Bow up. When I say up and down I meant those that were straight and those that were high….. giving the impression of high and low…

New floor joists 5mm height difference

Motoring on with my loft conversion, clearly winging it is the only way for me. All going surprisingly well so far. Most of the main floor joists are down - all nice and level except a couple that are 5mm up or down in places due to a slight bows in the wood. The ends are bang on, just have a...

    100 or 120mm celotex - warm roof?

Ha! It got 120mm….. also now got double glazing in the rest of the house too…. All modern like. But zero loft insulation as that’s all out as part of the loft conversion.

Gapotape vs expanding foam for PIR boards

Seen this on YouTube. Looks good stuff but hideously expensive. Pretty much half the price of the insulation again. Any of you used it or do you simply go the old school route with a foam gun and save a fortune?

    No VAT on insulation

Yes, I think I know deep down that the “gift” is actually a load of hot air (insulation helps keep that in). Anyhow, I’ll keep hoping to try and recoup cost on the extortionate wood prices! Am I surprised that politicians talk a load of *******s?

    No VAT on insulation

Not sure if I’m going to see the benefit, but in todays budget, it says they’ll be no VAT on insulation. (And solar panels and heat pumps) Now before I get excited, as I’m soon going to need a ton of Celotex for my loft conversion, do you recon this is VAT off sheets at a builders merchant or...

    Bent ridge board

Getting an appropriate steel in on my own would be very hard. The wooden beam is 3 300x50 timbers bolted together. So pretty much 300x150. Getting the the 6m lengths up the scaffold and through the roof needed me to take off the safety flip flops and move to safety crocs.

    Bent ridge board

You see, builders are stuck in their ways…. Needs a new kid on the block to rethink things. All not as bad as I thought. After a morning of ponder I decided to put my back into it and jack the beam up as hard as I could and reassess. The joint is more like 2/3 the way along. That 2/3 is damn...

    Bent ridge board

As part of my structural work as I commence my next phase of “learn as I go loft conversion”, I need to add a wooden ridge beam underneath the ridge board for support before I remove the rear part of the roof for the dormer. (Specced by SE). I got my beam in place today and have now realised...

This one is a finer cut. More teeth per inch which will make cutting plastic easier. https://www.screwfix.com/p/magnusson-11tpi-hardwood-toolbox-saw-14-355mm/3078v

    Expanding foam

A hacksaw wouldn’t work as it has a frame at the top. So you’d cut about 100mm before you couldn’t go any further. Have you got a jigsaw or limited to hand tools? You could get a fine tooth Jack saw from screwfix for £6-7. clamp your trim between 2 bits of wood to hold it straight and tight or...

    Expanding foam

That'll fall to pieces in seconds and look sh1t. You probably wont be able to buy the exact size you need, so buy bigger and cut it down and install with the cut edge hidden.
