damp and mould on walls and ceiling

Hello Alastair, Thank you so much for replying. The wall is an outside wall and not a chimney breast. I'm amazed that the ceiling is condensation - will taht make it easier to repair? How do I go about it? The wall isn't cavity filled so is it just a question of filling in the cracks in the...

damp and mould on walls and ceiling

Hello, After the heavy rain I was shocked to see spots across a corner of the lounge ceiling and damp down the adjacent wall. We have always had a couple of mysterious damp spots half way up the wall but now it's really bad. Because our house is old the guttering is a bit dodgy and overspills...

slight cracks in plaster of front of house

Hi, My house is old 1860s and in the 1930s or maybe later it was rendered and painted white with the big size bricks drawn in - if you know what I mean! Well over the years hairline cracks have appeared all over it and it looks really tatty. I have to repaint the front in white soon to smarten...

    painting front of house

Hello, I am about to give the front of the house a new coat of white paint as it is looking a bit grey and nasty. However, the house is old (1860) and it has been rendered in the past and this render over the years has developed a few cracks. They are a little unsightly so I wonder if there is...

    yellow spots

This is all very interesting - thank you. The windows are UPVC but in the style of Victorian sash. What is a trickle vent? :? You are right actually before we had them fitted we didn't seem to have this problem and the old windows were very draughty. We use one fireplace in the winter but thats...

    yellow spots

We have had doubled glazed "sash" windows for about 5 years now. The bathroom is across a very small landing and it doesn't have a window - just a small extractor fan. You walk up the stairs with the airing cupboard at the top of the stairs. To the right are 2 bedrooms and to the left is another...

    yellow spots

Well because it's a spare room I never really open the window and never do if it's cold. Should I be opening the window every day? :o

    yellow spots

Well, I do occasionally put some wet washing in the airing cupboard if it's been raining and I can't get it dry. The airing cupboard is at the top of the stairs next to the bedroom more or less. Do you think this could be linked to the problem?
