How to test a neon screwdriver

Yes John, I was looking at voltage indicators yesterday. I must admit though, for the price of the ones I saw, (£45-£70) I'd have been tempted to invest in a new DMM. I suppose that price is miniscule too, compared to if you had a problem with a duff neon....................... Thanks...

How to test a neon screwdriver

I know what you mean, It's just that it's the only one of several neons which has lit doing this. Maybe just more sensitive. ( the neon not me ) Pete

How to test a neon screwdriver

You mean throw it away because it shouldn't light from contact at both ends, or throw it away because they're useless/dangerous ? Pete

How to test a neon screwdriver

Hi all, just read the large post from ages ago on neon screwdrivers . and I absolutely don't want to start another but ; How would you quickly then test one with a multimeter? I've had several neons over the years as backups for a simple check, but I've got one now which...

Low energy bulbs blowing - just inspected & tested.

Thanks for that, Like I said I'll try a decent make next. Also,I think I'll take this opportunity to invest in a new multimeter. I've just been reading the large post on neon testers........ Voltage indicators seem a good idea but I think I'd get more use out of a multimeter. Cheers...

Low energy bulbs blowing - just inspected & tested.

Lectrician, Not really sure on the type of fitting. I know it has a ceramic holder for the bulb and it takes bulbs of type - large edison screw. The bulb filament is like a spiral too, but I'm sure that doesn't matter. Pete

Low energy bulbs blowing - just inspected & tested.

Well as it's mum-in-law's house she's been buying the bulbs and I suspect they've all been cheap ones. However it seems it's my problem now........... I'll try a good make 1st and take it from there. Cheers, Pete

Low energy bulbs blowing - just inspected & tested.

Thanks for that, it's an old/general purpose/digital multimeter. So I think I'd get it checked better before approaching the supplier. I assume then that energy-saving bulbs are more succeptible to blowing than other bulb types. The lights are all on the same circuit, but it's only ever the...

Low energy bulbs blowing - just inspected & tested.

Hi all, wifeys mum has just had a rewire & inspection/testing in her council house. They fitted an energy-saving light fitment in her bathroom, but since then she's replaced the bulb about 4 times in 3 months. As these bulbs are relatively dearer than normal ones, it's a real pain for...

    ok to add supplementary bonding?

Hi, I thought there had to be equipotenial bonding? in place, so that any voltages were equalised and I've heard people say that sparks mostly bond the shower to the light switch. So when I saw the wiring in the loft I expected to see an earth run alongside the 10mm wire. Cheers, Pete

    ok to add supplementary bonding?

Hi all, just been mooching around in the loft and I've seen that there's no earth running between the shower isolator switch and my bathroom light switch. Am I ok to just add the earthing myself ? Pete

    surge protector activated

Hi all, my TV,Sky,DVD,router + VCR were all fed from a Masterplug SurgeGuard 8-way extension, only 2 months old. Whilst upstairs on my Pc, I heard an alarm & found it to be the surge unit. Both the earth and surge led's were off. Done a quick check of the plug, wiring & fuse and all ok...

hi , all the very best to you Me mam's had a football go through her front window, the one next to the front door. It must measure about 3 x 3 . It looks like it's actually proper stained glass with pieces of lead in between various shapes of glass, or is this what's known as a leaded...

    combi boiler time to ignite

Actually no, he's just a plumber. Makes it sound like he's doing me a favour also. I just don't know what to do really. From what I've read so far, it could be the diaphragm, or blocked/scaled up domestic heat exchanger. <edit ... or would the reset pop up if it was the heat exchanger ...

    combi boiler time to ignite

Thanks for replies, in work last night so only just read them. there's no scale reducer in our house or boiler, but none of our friends or family have one either. (In Merseyside). Do we Northeners need them? I'm just letting the C H cool down to check that pipe as you say. Previously...

    combi boiler time to ignite

Hi all, got a Worcester Bosch 230 , around 8 years old. Been fine with no problems at all. Today I've noticed that when you turn the hot tap on as we normally would, it doesn't ignite. You have to turn the tap on fuller for the boiler to ignite. We do get hot water then, but because the tap is...
