If your boiler is 240 v switching a link from live to 4 then switch live from 5 to boiler ,

Have you any pass fitted ,could be lack of minimum flow

Correct ,sits in last position ,it may have gone to H as the hot water was up to temperature , mid position if both heating and hot water calling

When you have the stat removed of its back plate ( probably 240 v) is it still firing the boiler ,if no probably the stat if yes probably a zone valve issue assuming it’s only just started happening

They have none return built in

Have you considered secondary glazing

Has your boiler a built in clock ? If so it need leaving to permanent on .
