Finished ground level is roughly at the bottom of that wooden gate post. Yes, the pipe bends below ground

Pope too close to wall to add gulley?

Hi, Am doing some block paving and was toying with the idea of turning this downpipe entry into a gulley, by adding a hopper to the top. But I think the pipe might be too close to the wall. Other than dig it out and relocate, is there anything I can do? Cheers

Pool heaters ... electric power question added

How is the cable attached to the heater itself? Would it be easy to replace it with a longer cable? You should be able to buy a 20-30m cable that will carry 2.2kw easily enough, it’s just under 10A

Ronseal fence stain on decking? How to fix?

So I painted the fence with Ronseal Red Cedar fence stain a few weeks ago, and wife’s been complaining that it looks rubbish with the decking not painted. Arrived home this evening to find out her and the 7yr old have painted it in the same stain. Obviously the divorce letters are in the post...

Adding a flow switch to an electric pump...

An electric valve in the feed pipe from the IBC to the pump. Normally closed, but wired in with the pump so that when the pump is switched on, the valve opened and water can flow. This way the pump can remain plugged into an ordinary socket, no relays, no contactors, no flow switch etc. It...

Adding a flow switch to an electric pump...

And I am very grateful Sunray :) Regarding overload protection, the pump is fitted with a 3A fuse in the plug - does this not help? There is also a rather large 10uF capacitor fitted, I assume to help the motor start? I know the pump also has a thermal cut out... To be honest, as an...

Adding a flow switch to an electric pump...

Seems to be in perfect working order to be fair - very good pressure when running. It was a woman selling it as her father had died and she was clearing his house out prior to sale. Video in action:

Adding a flow switch to an electric pump...

Thanks all, some decent discussion here :) Regarding flow before the pump starts, there is a half decent gravity-induced flow through the pump before I switch it on... In terms of protection for the pump, using a contactor etc, I’m inclined to think it’s overkill. I picked up the pump on eBay...

Adding a flow switch to an electric pump...

Thanks Bernard. Can I ask why you would use a bell supply, rather than a simple 12v plug-in power supply?

Adding a flow switch to an electric pump...

That makes sense, and I think I was leaning towards a relay anyway. Thanks. Next question - would you be able to suggest a suitable relay please? I see lots talking about Solid State relays, but are they suitable for inductive loads such as a motor? I was considering something like this...

Adding a flow switch to an electric pump...

Hi all, I collect rainwater in a couple of IBC containers and use it for my micro irrigation system. Water is pumped through the system by a Karcher GP40 3.5 Bar pump, rated at 650W. At present I have to switch it on manually, however am considering the best way to have it automatically...

Block paved patio, too much sand?

So you don’t think the sand being too deep will affect it, as long as it’s properly compacted?

Block paved patio, too much sand?

Ah yes, I would’ve preferred it sloping away from the house, but the garden’s natural fall is towards the house, and I didn’t want a step up to lawn. So had to go for the channel drain option

Block paved patio, too much sand?

sorry, unsure what you mean? The sand is just in roughly at the moment. Ordinarily there would be a compacted hardcore layer underneath, but this just has soil, some hardcore then more sand than is ideal. So planning to company this layer of sand, then add some loose sand as a bedding layer...

Block paved patio, too much sand?

So, decided to make my own patio during lockdown. It will be with ordinary 200x100 block paving. I’ve concreted in the channel drain and the soldier/edging blocks. Today I put the sharp sand down and got it roughly at the right level. I’m worried there’s too much sand though, in places it will...

    Protection for pine table

Hi all, As I’ve had some time to myself, I’ve made a table and chair set for our kids to use. It’s made out of white pine. I’d like to give it a layer of clear protection, something that will stand up to spillages of milk, tomato ketchup, tomato soup etc. I have Ronseal water based Matt...
