    workshop dust extractor

A late response but I have to caution against anyone taking the advice of oilman. I agree with him re getting rid of dust and the dangers etc but that rexon, according to the spec I read, only filters down to 2 microns. That's big! It's the smaller stuff that is the danger and the record...

    standpipes and tiling

Sorry. not with you. The bath is totally separate to the freestanding taps. Are you suggesting that the feedpipes to the taps are plastic (hep2O)? I like that idea. Stick a tap connector on the end of the plastic. Rely on the setscrew in the top of the standpipe to keep the taps secure.

    standpipes and tiling

Website gives no info ...Hudson Reed Minimalist Standpipes. The info I posted was verbally from Hudson Reed and, if I'm honest, it did seem OK.

    standpipes and tiling

Thanks for that. After doing a bit more research, looks like the ones I intend to use have the water pipe running up inside the standpipe. So tap connector on the end and fastened to the tap, pull down the tap and secure with an Allen key, then fasten the standpipe down at the base. Then make...

Can I tile directly onto paint in a bathroom?

Refurbishing a small bathroom. Putting a shower screen over the bath and planning to tile the two walls (at the side of the bath and the shower end). Can I tile directly onto the painted wall? The paint is in good nick and not flaking.

    standpipes and tiling

In the process of refurbishing the bathroom. We need to fit freestanding standpipes and the floor will be tiled. What I can't get my head round is the sequence of tiling and the plumbing. 1) This is not helped by the fact that I can't seem to find any information on standpipes. Are they...

Velux conservation windows vs normal Velux

First off - I do not live in a conservation area. Neither is my building listed. But it is an old black and white cottage with slate roof. I like the idea that the Conservation Velux is low-profile by virtue of the 'recessed installation'. Can the normal Velux be mounted as a recessed...

    Sound insulation of stud walls

Sirrah...you do me a disservice! I am saying wood is best -and that's why I'm making them myself so that I get elegant glazing bars and not the tree trunks that many modern wooden windows have!

Is planning permisison required for en suite shower room?

A fair point but if you follow your line of argument to its'logical conclusion then 95% of all old property in the country is non-compliant. But that won't necessarily stop a sale. If I was putting in an en-suite for myself and was going to stay in the property for the next 10 or so years then...

    Sound insulation of stud walls

OK - no problem as it applies to external walls and not internal. Loads of Kingspan going on the external walls and so plaster thermal efficiency pales into insignificance in my case! My local BCO is pretty approachable and has also given me dispensation to go for 4:6:4 argon filled glazing...

Best way to remove gloss paint from Brick

There's a better way. Get some sodium hydroxide and mix it up into a stiff mix with wallpaper paste. Apply to the brick and leave overnight. Cover if rain expected. In the morning hose it all off. If you're unlucky then you may have to give it a second go.

Is planning permisison required for en suite shower room?

Or if he's not thinking of selling for a very long time, just go ahead and do a decent job?

Are you 100% sure on that, Richard? Where does the reference to plaster come from ?

    Sound insulation of stud walls

Mmmm..depends what you mean by making a new bedroom. Do you mean as part of a new extension. If so then I understand. But I am dividing up a large area into a couple of bedrooms where previously there was only the one and a large wasted space in the landing area. I've had the discussion...

    Sound insulation of stud walls

Hi Woody...yes, I did read that but then saw the reply afterwards which seemed to suggest that BC did still need to be involved and as there was no further disclaimer......... :? and so thanks for the clarification. What about the existing internal oak frame where I've knocked out the old...

    Sound insulation of stud walls

Now I'm totally confused! I'm renovating an old property under Building Control notice. It's an old oak framed timber building. I've taken down all the old internal lath and plaster walls leaving behind the open oak frame that will form the wall between rooms. Some of this oak frame I will...

Building Control Notice, Part P and DIY

Oh boy - am I well and truly stuffed. Just spoke to Building Control and they said that they want to see all the wiring before it is covered up. Now I have here essentially an empty shell of a building. And it's going to need Kingspan on the walls etc and in the roof void etc. I intended to...

Building Control Notice, Part P and DIY

I'm not sure that's always thecase. For example, with my council, the amount of money you pay is directly related to the approx cost of any refurbishment work and there are scale charges for that. In my case, I filed a Building Notice to cover all the renovation work I'm doing. The fee charged...

    using multifoil insulation with 'Kingspan'

Thought I'd post this for the benefit of others who might have been considering this option. I'm renovating an old property and want to show off the old oak purlins to their best advantage. Pitched roof. The rafters are about 100mm deep. In an ideal world, and if you believe the...
