    Supply to shed!

I'm wiring a brick shed and I've got 2.5mm SWA running into it then i'm going to connect it to a socket then to a light switch etc via a FCU. One thought... Is there anything wrong with the input to the shed going straight into the FCU(used as a light switch) and taking the socket supplies...

    Fixing roofs to walls.

Hi. I'm helping my father-in-law to build an brick shed. All the walls are up and now i'm doing the roof. The question i have is how to join the roof to the walls. I was going to put a length of 4"x2" on top of the wall then fix the roof joists to these. What i've been told to do is put a...

    Securing to plaster blocks.

Hi, I live in a really old house and the walls upstairs are constructed of plaster and straw blocks. The trouble I'm having is securely fixing things to these blocks. I've tried wall plugs and other various fixings but they don't seem to work as good as would like. Has anyone got any ideas...

    MEM busbars

Thanks for the replies. All sorted now. It was an old "forked" busbar. I was told a MCB for this type would have to be ordered from MEM and would take two weeks and cost around £30. I did a bit of searching around and found an alternative for £14. Better! Thanks again.

    MEM busbars

I've got a question about MEM consumer unit busbars. I opened one up today and found that each individual leg on the busbar consisted of a small screw and a "slither" of copper. (Totally unlike the usual ones I've dealt with). Are these easily available and what do i ask for? Cheers.

    RCD

Thanks. I assumed that with the new regs being RCD..RCD..RCD..RCD etc that outside lights would have been in there somewhere. I personally agree with RCD's and i've advised them to get one even if it's not me that fits it. So i take it that just fitting a FCU from a socket would be sufficient?

    RCD

Hi, I've been asked to fit an outside security light. The Consumer unit has no RCD but does have spare ways. My idea is to fit a RCD supplying the downstair sockets and then from one of these sockets fit a 13A FCU that will supply the light. I also had another thought.... If i do not fit a RCD...

I'll put some 2" x 1"s up and i suppose it'll add to the sound proofing from the kids in the loft room. The work in this house is never ending!! Thanks gents.

    Plasterboarding ceilings.

Hi. I'm fixing fire check plasterboard onto my bedroom ceiling. The ceiling is lathe and laster which i'm leaving up. Do I have to butt the edges of the boards on a joist as i would if fixing straight to joists? I thought that, due to the ceiling having the original lathe and plaster, i could...

    Clean/dirty electricity

He did mention about plugging heaters into the other "dirty" circuit at the checkouts and blowing the fuses. Thanks again.

    Clean/dirty electricity

Good read. I learnt all about Quantum physics last year with the OU so what my parents said all those years ago was right. What I learn in school will come in handy some day. I take it all the checkouts etc are fed by this supply. He's taking me around next week to have a look so at least I...

    Outdoor sockets.

Thanks for the advice and link. I've read through the link and it seems straight forward but, as you say, i need to practice. Going to my second home today (Screwfix!!) to pick up some gear to practice on. (10% off weekend in Cardiff - FANTASTIC!) Thanks again.

    Outdoor sockets.

Sorry been away this week. Lectrician, can you clarify a couple of things please? I can spur to two sockets if I use a FCU? If so what is the maximum number of sockets i can spur from one point via a FCU? Also, If I was only spurring to one socket I wouldn't need to use a FCU? Even...

    Outdoor sockets.

Thanks for your quick response. I've never used SWA but i am going to find the correct way and do the job safely. Have you any good websites etc that will help me? I also know I have to inform building control of the work which I will do. I'm trying to learn the trade and the best way for me...

    Outdoor sockets.

I've just been asked by a friend if it's possible to wire up a double and a single socket in their back garden. I was going to run a 2.5mm T&E from a double socket inside to a 30mA RCD adjacent to the inside socket then run a 2.5mm T&E through the wall from the RCD to the outside double socket...

    Fitting a new consumer unit

Hi, I’m a relatively "new electrician" who has spent 23 years as an engineer in the Royal Navy and I'm now embarking on a career as an electrician. I've passed 2381 and 2391 and have some experience in domestic electrics. What I need is a few tips as I learn more please from all of you...
