    Bathroom Extractor - Please Help

I'm not an expert on anything but have just installed replacement fans in the bathroom and ensuite. To find the extraction rate needed I used this: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/Ventilation/Ventilation4.html and because I could not find a suitable fan (the distances to an outside...

Musty damp smell - airbricks blocked?

Thank you all for all your replies. In answer to the questions: How old is your house? Late 1950s, early sixties I think Are there airbricks to ventilate the underfloor void? The airbricks are above the damp proof course on the external wall. The internal wall in the bedroom does not have...

Musty damp smell - airbricks blocked?

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this? We have a damp musty smell in a bedroom which as a child I would have described as the smell of an 'old person's house' We bought our bungalow in 2005 and I had cavity wall insulation installed. There are airbricks ar the top and bottom of the...

Hi, Please can you help me with what are probably 2 basic questions: Re: Metal Garage door. This has just been shot blasted and painted in gloss white. But it seems to show up many imperfections, dents etc that we didn't seem to see before. (Maybe it was damaged when shot blasted or the...

Plaster problems in hall and kitchen - 'blistering'

Dear all, Thanks for the recent replies. You can imagine I didn't expect any after this time but it is greatly appreciated. The wall was sanded back and repainted based on the advice of a decorator and unwillingness on my wife's part to listen to advice that I found on the internet. LOL! As...

    Replacement downlighter - advice please

Thanks to all for the replies - LOL too Oharaf, have looked at the low voltage screwfix GU10s and the reviews are terrible. Any other ideas? Jockspark, have looked at Belllight.co.uk website and can see converters to reduce size but cannot see if suitable for low energy bulbs. The images...

    Replacement downlighter - advice please

Hope this question has not been answered previously but I have searched the forums for downlighter advice and despite many posts I can't find an answer I can follow: About 3 years ago my wife wanted downlighters in the kitchen so we fitted 60W R80 reflector fittings (we'd had them in a...

Brass door handles - how to avoid the same mistake?

We had new internal doors fitted about 3 years ago - the builder got them and the handles from Howdens. Within weeks a "plastic film" seemed to peel off the handles and they tarnished. They were replaced once and the same thing happened. (Other life issues stopped us following up further with...

What underlay for a laminate floor?

Thanks Wood You Like I propose to go with the Timbermate Duratex and see what the fitter says re: the height. I guess I'll be able to change it if he says it's 0.6mm too far. I think your own site is great and wish I could have chosen real wood but the height issue and now my wife are against...

What underlay for a laminate floor?

Hi, I've read many posts on this and am still confused. Can someone teach me please? I am planning a laminate floor in the hall. There is minimal room between the concrete floor and a inward opening pvc door so height is an issue. Unfortunately shop advice is minimal. When asked they don't...

    Shower extractor fan replacement

Please help. I thought I had this sussed but something made me check again. When looking for a fan supplier I found a website which supported the fan size calculation. However it then mentioned losses in the ducting. Our rooms are: En-suite: 2.4m x 1.27m x 2.5m = 7.62m³. The site suggests...

    masonry bee problem?

Dear all, Thanks for the advice but I am confused: Symptoms wrote: "Next Spring look out for the Queen's flight then block-up if necessary" Do you mean a mass exodus from the wall? I understand masonry bees are known as solitary bees so there won't be a Queen's flight as such? Libby Lou...

    microgenus A77 error code

Dear all, Thanks for all the responses. Touch wood I'm finally clear of the A77 problems and it was caused by faulty installation of the pipes from the condensate overflow. (Pipe too small and not supported enough it appears, therefore it never properly drained away). I'll be back asking...

    Shower extractor fan replacement

Dear all, Thanks for the many replies: Having read the link I believe the fans (Silavent Vitalis 100TB's) I am proposing are up to the job. Extract rate = 44l/sec versus 15l/sec requirement and with 15 min time overrun. I'm not an electrician (and not very practical truth as my questions...

    Potential Damp Problem

Hi, Sorry I can't be helpful on this. But I posted some similar pictures previously so am interested in the outcome. We have just had the walls replastered (in the local area) and repainted with emulsion. Sounds like the problem may recur though.......I'll follow up if it does. Thanks, Pete
