Brass door handles - how to avoid the same mistake?

We had new internal doors fitted about 3 years ago - the builder got them and the handles from Howdens.
Within weeks a "plastic film" seemed to peel off the handles and they tarnished. They were replaced once and the same thing happened. (Other life issues stopped us following up further with Howdens).
We are now redecorating and would like to replace the handles.

How can we buy with confidence to avoid the same thing happening?

My wife would like the same simple style and size to minimise problems in drilling / oversize holes etc - unfortunately each handle manufacture seems to have the screw holes in different places so I may have to fill and drill again.....

Thank you

brass naturally tarnishes

most brands are lacquered to protect them

If you feel like it you can take off your existing handles, strip off any lacquer, repolish them and either spray with lacquer yourself, or polish once a week or so.

Or get chrome or other finish.

Hi JohnD
Just to let you know we bought some satin brass finish handles which are much better and we are well pleased with them.
Thanks
