Relocating my boiler - few questions

You are the first person to mention the word illegal, so before you did, it was the illegal bit I didn't understand. Please don't be offended.

Relocating my boiler - few questions

I'm obviously missing something. Please don't jump down my throat, but someone please explain what part of the job is so critical and dangerous? I've done all sorts of minor building work, re plumbed 75% of the whole house and am generally competent. Phisically mounting a boiler within...

Relocating my boiler - few questions

Oh dear - hope I haven't said something too stupid? Just re-read my post - the corgi bit isn't meant to sound condacending, all I mean is that I'm competent enough to do the mechanical part of the job but understand that the gas supply is an important area of safety and will need corgi...

Relocating my boiler - few questions

I'm about to start a new kitchen project which requires moving the boiler - Baxi Solo - works perfectly and isn't going to be replaced. Here it is in it's current location.... Behind the wall to the right is the garage and I'm going to move the boiler literally to the other side of...

Is this a load bearing wall?

I started with all the elevations and plans at first ( I used to be a draughtsman) but it then turned into a hobby / challenge and I sat with the lap top on my knee for a few hours each evening for a good couple of weeks. I went OTT a bit - I had the basic structure done in a couple of hours...

Is this a load bearing wall?

Thanks. I was thinking more along the lines of torsional rigidity, but I guess it isn't going to 'fall over' Waht is the accepted method / tools used to create the slot in the bearing walls to support the beam? Surely it isn't chain drilled holes and a chisel? As far as Sketch up goes, I...

Is this a load bearing wall?

Sketchup? I've absolutely no idea what you're talking about... So, just to confirm, engineering bricks up tight and dry against the bottom of the beam without mortar, but with no more than a 10mm mortar bed underneath them? Also, when boxing in, do I need to fill the voids in...

Is this a load bearing wall?

Thanks 4.8, total span with the beam in the middle.... I'll order the beam today. Just a final two questions though - Is a single engineering block under each end suficient as a pad stone bearing? And what would you recommend as a 'wedge' to force it up hard to the joists? Also...

Is this a load bearing wall?

Spoke to Catnic today who said that under no circumstances should I install one of their box lintels directly under the joists. I need apparently 225mm minimum blockwork between the lintel and joist. I priced them up at best part of £300 inc delivery and decided to stick to a universal beam...

Is this a load bearing wall?

Some progress and questions.... I spoke to the inspector at Wirral Borough Council today who was very helpful indeed. He said that as long as the beam is obviously 'up to the job' calcs wouldn't be needed. Inspection is £98. Someone suggested a Catnic box lintel CN6XB to do the job and at...

    Me too please... :D

    Box lintel vrs RSJ ?

Please can someone explain the difference in application suitability between box lintels and RSJ's? I'm removing a 3m long load bearing wall between my kitchen and dining room and during my research have read much conflicting information about the pros and cons of each. If it matters, it...

Is this a load bearing wall?

    Genuinely, thanks very much!

Is this a load bearing wall?

WOW - what can I say other than thank you VERY much! Given my dimensions are only aproximate and may be off be a few inches, will that ultimately alter the size of the beam I need? Will I be able to buy and install that beam and just get a council surveyor to inspect it before it's closed...

Is this a load bearing wall?

The wall is 9' 10" wide + the ends that need to be burried on to the pad stones. The joists over the kitchen and dining room are both approx 8' long and over lap above the wall it would seem.

Is this a load bearing wall?

Yes, the full wall to create a kitchen diner type of thing....

Is this a load bearing wall?

Good point - I can only see one of them any distance with a torch through the hole and it finnishes about 18" away! Guess that answers that one then, thanks. How do I work out what sized beam I need to order please?

Is this a load bearing wall?

No time like the present.... So, are they 'resting' or being 'supported' ?

Is this a load bearing wall?

I'll remove some plaster board at the top of the wall and see if I can see if the beams are resting on the wall.
