Please explain Woody. Could this be the source of my damp?

Thought it'd be something like that so thanks for the heads up

    Missing mortar in chimney perps

Hi, I have a damp patch in a front bedroom and while trying to find the cause on the roof, I noticed that the chimney has missing mortar in the bottom perp above the flashing. Its the same on the left elevation too and looks deliberate (see photo). Any ideas why this might be or should I just...

    Edwardian roof gully hassle

I had a really good look at this today. I had to drain and remove 2x redundant 40 gallon tanks (they are now in 6 pieces to fit through the loft hatch) and I was covered in pigeon crap from head to toe as is my wet and dry vac. One of the tanks had an overflow that landed right in the centre...

    Edwardian roof gully hassle

I did think of putting a 4" pipe in the gully and changing the lead arrangement around the exit from the valley but the building is listed so whatever I do needs to be very inobtrusive. The timber for the box gully is in good nick so I'm not worried about it collapsing.

    Edwardian roof gully hassle

We have a valley between two roofs and a gully that passes through one of the roofs to drain the valley. Today, during storm Bert, the electrics tripped and water was cascading through the ceiling. It turns out the gully, that passes through the roof, was filled with crap from pigeons that have...

How to calculate the resistance of a wash pump

New capcitor fitted and it runs the same. I took the motor to bits and the bearings and seals are shot and the windings have overheated so a new (expensive) pump it is. Thanks for the help guys.

How to calculate the resistance of a wash pump

Ok. I see now. I just ran the pump again and it started to spin albeit slowly. The windings started to smell so I turned it off quickly. The motor spins by hand (bearings seem a little dry) so I'll order a new capacitor. I'm presuming that that is the best course of action? Thanks

How to calculate the resistance of a wash pump

That's interesting. I don't hear the pump move and the fuse blows right away when it should run. So would I be right in saying is that if the pump is stalled or will not start (perhaps due to the capacitor) then the windings will take 20A and blow my 4A fuse? For info, I just tested the unit...

How to calculate the resistance of a wash pump

It blows a 4A fuse when the motor starts. Would a failed capacitor do that? I've also noticed some water staining on the motor housing that could have crept onto the windings. I guess I could hook it up to the mains directly and see if I blow a plug top fuse (or trip the breaker).

How to calculate the resistance of a wash pump

Hi, I have a wash pump that I think is faulty but I cant find any data on what the resistance of the windings should be. I have a photo of the pump (attached). It is single phase with a L and N and measures 12 ohms. Does that sound low for a 470W pump?

    Hardwood bannister varnish

It will scrape off with a fingernail. I won't have the opportunity to leave it for a long time to dry so I'll probably go for danish oil.

    Hardwood bannister varnish

Hi, I have a hardwood bannister that has been painted with a varnish that has gone kinda sticky. I suspect it is one of these ronseal exterior products. I'm going to sand it all off but what would be the best product to use to revarnish with. Thanks

Wall prep before tiling best practice

I've just spent the day removing old tiles from my bathroom. One wall was lath & plaster and the others were plasterboard. I managed to save the lath & plaster wall because someone had tiled over woodchip so the woodchip came off with the tiles and saved the lath & plaster. The same cannot be...

Bosch Serie 2 Dishwasher not drying

I have an SMS50T22GB/09 dishwasher that has stopped drying at the end of the cycle. It also wasn't heating the water during the wash cycle but I replaced the heat pump and now the water heats during the cycle but just not for the drying part. Any ideas?

    That's interesting

Rads only heating at the top.

I'd already watched a couple of videos on Youtube about balancing the radiators and had already done this. If that's where JohnD was going, he didn't say so.

Rads only heating at the top.

Exactly. This is what I was surmising in the original question but thought I would need to change the pump rather than finding a different operating mode.

Rads only heating at the top.

No, I was asked to close 3 (post #4) but I knew that the 4 x TRVs on the 1st floor were closed already.
