    Refreshing the staircase

I'd love to remove all the woodwork at the top but not sure how to redesign it? I was thinking of completely removing the newel on the left. Obviously i'd need to keep (ie: replace) the one on the right but there'd be a 10-20cm gap between the wall and newel post. It's a bit of an odd gap, not...

    Refreshing the staircase

Now the bathrooms have been re-modernised the missus is eyeing up a new staircase and tidying up the landing/hall. She has her heart set on an Axxys Clearview oak & glass kit which contains the handrail, baserail, two newel posts and the glass panels. At the top of our staircase there's...

Help! Adjusting rad pipes and microbore to 15mm?

Last year i did our en suite which involved replacing a standard radiator with a towel radiator. All the rads in the house are on 10mm pipes which are burred in the wall. When i replaced the rad in the en suite i lifted the floorboards, chopped the pipes, used 10 to 15 mm pushfit converters and...

    Kingspan TF70 supporting weight?

We had our garage converted into a usable room last year. The builder used Kingspan TF70 100mm to insulate and raise the garage floor to the same height as the reset of the house. He's then over-boarded this with tongue and grove chipboard panels. I was under the impression a floating floor...

    Installing a stone shower tray

Ah ok, yes we're putting new porcelain tiles down on the floor. I was planning to over board with wbp anyway so will use this as a base. So is the bedding mortar used only for levelling purposes or is it recommended even if the floor is already level?

    Installing a stone shower tray

I am about to pull out our old bathroom suite including a shower cubical and tray. The existing tray is acrylic and was installed on a riser kit. The replacement we've purchased is a low profile stone resin tray. The bathroom subfloor is chipboard tongue and grove panelling. I've not installed a...

    Electric shower rating?

We're planning on renovating our bathroom and looking for new shower to replace an old 8.5kw shower. I haven't checked the cable size as yet but part of a protected group (80amp RCD) and is on its own B32 MCB. Can we go for a 9 or 10kw shower, assuming the cable size it adequate, or are we...

    Garage door draught excluder

We have a Henderson up & over door in our garage. We live near the coast in the north east and needless to say the garage gets very cold at this time of year. There's a 20-30mm gap at each side of the garage door which isn't helping. I'm looking to fit draught excluders and probably insult the...

    Fire door height regulations?

ok thanks all. indeed it is a bad bodge but just above the door lintel is a steel lintel that runs the entire length of the house. our builder said he's never seen anything like it and it would be easier to block up the door way and make a new one further down the wall. at the end of the day its...

    Fire door height regulations?

Is there a legal height requirement for a fire door? We're converting half of a double garage into a habitable room. There is a dividing wall down the middle of the garage with an existing door way (no door or door casing/frame). Because we have installed a floating floor we now need to take 5"...

Easy fit oak veneer door linings, any good?

The doors she's chosen allows for 10mm trimming either side. I was thinking of ripping out the old linings. I know if means more work but it would look better than oak doors with oak frames on white glossed linings. Is there another easier option I don't know about?

Easy fit oak veneer door linings, any good?

So the missus is on a mission to renovate the entire house and wants to start by replacing all the standard glossed white internal doors, skirting and architrave. She's wants to go with oak and has found some veneered doors at Howden's. I've been looking at real oak door linings, architrave and...
