Replacing oven with no RCD protection

Not sure where you guys got the added socket on the ccu from but it's an interesting discussion none the less. My question/interpretation has been confirmed, thanks for all the input again. :)

Replacing oven with no RCD protection

I've been having a bit of a discussion with a mate of mine and the topic was replacing an oven on a dedicated circuit that doesn't have RCD protection. (The house is wired on an old 1980s CU.) He's saying that the circuit now needs to have an RCD put on it before a sparky can replace the...

Smoke and heat dectectors design, fit and cert requirments

Turns out the property is a 3 story HMO and that the customer has had a quote from the letting agency to do the work, £350! I've informed the customer that it is my understanding that because its a 3 story HMO the work needs to be Grade A, LD2 and that I can't come close to that price and...

    cooker switch

MCB protects every item from overload on the circuit, therefor every item should be rated higher than the MCB (cable and switches). So yes you can/should use a 45A switch.

Smoke and heat dectectors design, fit and cert requirments

Hi guys. I'm a registered "full scope" electrician with NAPIT and rather than asking them I thought I'd ask you guys if you know whether or not I would be allowed to design, fit and certify a heat and smoke detection system in a rented property? I understand that all work needs to be in line...

MK Sentry 100A Switch Disconnector recall

Lol. That's why I will test a ring final rather than a lighting circuit. ;)

MK Sentry 100A Switch Disconnector recall

That's the thing, nothing you can test on a circuit has anything to do with the main switch. Ok maybe Zs but now we're working live for an "unnessersary" reason. Testing a global IR isn't really going to involve the main switch. I'll just do the job as if I've made an alteration to a ring...

    Seperation of none electrical services

Cheers John. I would have gone with putting the cables in some trunking but the gap between the conductors and gas pipe isn't big enough. The book does talk about wrapping the pipe in a PVC wrap but a quick Google search didn't show me what this is. Any chance you can give me a link to the...

MK Sentry 100A Switch Disconnector recall

Ok, thanks guys. I still can't see the point of testing a circuit but I think I'll just test a ring to satisfy the requirement to fill out in ful a MW ticket.

MK Sentry 100A Switch Disconnector recall

Hi guys. Has anyone had to change a MK Sentry 100A Switch Disconnector on the product recall yet? I went to check one of my MK CU I fitted and found that it's part of the recall. Now I need to replace the switch and, by request of MK, fill out a minor works ticket for the job. My...

    Seperation of none electrical services

Thanks ricicle. I thought that might be the appropriate way of going about it but just wanted confirmation as I’ve only fitted 3 CU in my short time being a qualified electrician and this would be my first departure from the regs.

    Seperation of none electrical services

I've been asked to change a CU. However the existing CU and cables breaks the 150mm (location of CU to gas pipe) and 50mm (circuit cables into CU) separation rules to mains gas pipe. I've informed the client of the issue and they've told me that the pipe work is being moved in a few months...

    Three 3kW handwashers

Thank you all so much for all your input to this post. I've learnt a lot from this and look forward to applying these new ideas if I get the job. Also a BIG thumbs up for the understanding you guys have shown to my daft questions. I've been on other electrical forums before and seen the...

    Three 3kW handwashers

I see. Thanks for clearing that up for me. So to use the “rule” of 3x I could drop a 50A MCB in at the CU. Yes I need to up the CSA of the cable from the up stream CU to the down stream one but as this would be such a small run it wouldn’t make any significant difference in cable costs. <This...

Yes this would be spot on BUT it is a 230v CU I've been given to work off. :(

    Three 3kW handwashers

Sorry I've not replied for the last few days, I've been busy and not had a chance to have a closer look at the installation. I've now found a CU that contains 3 spare 60898 MCB. Now the first thing I though was just run 3 radials from these spares but then I thought why not run the system...
