Replacing drains damaged by tree roots etc.

The house we are trying to buy had blocked drains which the vendor paid to clear and then have CCTV inspection. The report has come back that there are three displaced joints, two circumferential fractures, a circumferential crack (probably the same thing?), two locations of root ingress...

    Lead mains water pipe

The survey for a house we are buying amongst a million other things states that the lead mains water supply should be replaced by copper. I know the issues regarding health, and am prepared to discount them in my decision. However its not clear to me if the other justification of pipe...

Sewage smell from under utility cupboards

The smell in the kitchen cupboards in the house I bought was quite similar. Turned out it was blocked drain outside the house; a stopper had fallen into the interceptor. Putting that in its correct place and rodding sorted it out. Cost me nothing apart from a splitting headache from the...

Pics from XP not recognised by Vista???

father in law had a similar problem, turned out he always chose to format the disc before writing to it. this made it readable only with ...whatever proprietary windows software was on his pc allowing him to do this... thus when we tried to look at pics on various other pcs we couldn't, as that...

    modem connection problem

Its not uncommon for these faults to be a result of poor quality ADSL filters. I chuck whatever comes with the modem, and spend a tenner on a BT one from Maplins, you need one for every device, sky box, phones etc. Apparently BT will only guarantee ADSL up to the first 3 metres into the house...

Help, I can't programme my new digistat!

Thank you, however I already have these instructions. I find them ambiguous-why would I programme the timers on the boiler when I have a digistat? I am assuming that the digistat overrides anything that is set on the boiler. Tim

Help, I can't programme my new digistat!

Hello! One year ago I had plumbers install a new combi boiler (Worcester Greenstar 28i junoir), radiators with thermostatic valves, and chose a wireless digistat (WorcesterDT10RF Programmer). All very nice BUT I haven't been able to make the house stabilise at a comfortable temperature! I...

Changing door handles, hole lotta trouble!

I want to change the knobs on my solid wood doors to levers, and have a large stumbling block. I presume I need to fill both of the cavities pictured with wood before I can install the new handles? Does anyone have any hot tips to get me through this dilemma? Many thanks, Tim...

Solution for patio edge, soil falling onto slabs

The fence belongs to my neighbour, hence its unkempt appearance! Under the slabs is a typical base which is cement and sand. Thanks for the suggestions, I think the least intrusive would be gravel boards so will give them a go.

Solution for patio edge, soil falling onto slabs

Hi, I wonder if anyone has a suggestion for me, I need to stop soil collapsing from the neighbour's property onto my patio. http://www.tjbeauregard.plus.com/patio/Patio.jpg The most distant slab is missing as I will fill the space with gravel as a drainage aid. There is a reasonable...

    stepping garden with railway sleepers

I bought 'sleepers' from http://www.kayser-uk.com/default.asp?contentID=3 They are new, pressure treated pine made to railway sleeper dimensions. I had to order two loads as I miscalculated and therefore got penalised on delivery charges. Professional firm, and the best price for what I was...

Organic control of scale insect on large Euonymus?

hmmm very interesting website! Seems that there is no perfect solution to this. Late May-early June looks to be the best time to spray for the crawler stage, as well as Late July-early August. I'll also do a bit of manual scraping. Thanks!

Organic control of scale insect on large Euonymus?

Thank you for the link, a helpful site re scale. Am I to presume that the fatty acids are the best organic treatment? If this is the case, fine, I'll search out a cheap source. Anyone know when would be the best to attack this beastie? Or should I just chop out this fine specimen and...

Organic control of scale insect on large Euonymus?

Hi, I bought a house in 2005, along with a badly scale infected variegated Euonymus (probably japonicus aureomarginatus). As I'm trying to be organic as possible, I've been using the organic scale spray from the garden centres, the fatty acid products. Trouble is, the bush is 8 feet tall...

Smell Gas? Call Free and let us waste your time!

Crisis at 4pm yesterday (it never happens at 9am), missus smelt gas, turned it off, and called the helpful people from British Gas. Engineer from Wales & West Utilities came and turned it on, confirmed a leak and turned it off. Served a notice that it mustn't be turned on until the leak is...

    cutting wall tiles

Having just been thru this, I might help with my experiences: Easiest way to make irregular cuts on tiles is with a tile cutting disc on your angle grinder. http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/cat.jsp?cId=A338057&ts=18569 Easiest way to make small holes in tiles (for screws eg radiator...

Is Homebase paint the same as Crown? Quality question!

Thanx for yer reply. If Crown is also poor quality, what would you define as good? Those Farrow and Balls types, named after harvest foods eg "wholegrain bread with ham and a hint of mustard"? I have to say I think they're overrated! (if you hadn't already guessed)

Is Homebase paint the same as Crown? Quality question!

The pots that they come in are the same, and there is a £3 difference for a 2.5l pot. Obviously the colours are named differently but the shades look the same to me. If they are the same then I wouldn't need to worry about the quality difference, and save a few bob. Do you agree? And if they...
